Par conséquent, ceux-ci s'efforcent de contrecarrer la législation prohibitive du Blocus continental par tous les moyens possibles. L'analyse des réactions du négoce de Bordeaux, Hambourg et Livourne démontre que le recours aux navires neutres, la déviation des routes commerciales, la corruption et la contrebande sont des armes puissantes qui rendent largement inefficaces les tentatives du régime d'interdire les relations commerciales entre la Grande-Bretagne et l'Europe. L'étude comparée des trois villes permet de constater que cette incapacité du régime napoléonien à appliquer efficacement sa politique commerciale n'est pas une défaillance locale, occasionnelle, due à une conjoncture particulière, mais plutôt une donnée structurelle qui s'explique par des faiblesses internes à toute son administration, et par l'existence de cet adversaire redoutable qu'est le négoce, avec ses intérêts souvent opposés à ceux du régime, et dont les logiques et les horizons internationaux ne pouvaient pas se plier à une optique nationale et étatique.

At once postcolonial and neoimperial, the America of 1812 was still in need of definition. As the imminence of war intensified the political, economic, and social tensions endemic to the new nation, Americans of all kinds fought for country on the battleground of culture. The War of 1812 increased interest in the American democratic project and elicited calls for national unity, yet the essays collected in this volume suggest that the United States did not emerge from war in 1815 having resolved the Revolution's fundamental challenges or achieved a stable national identity. A series of colonial wars, from the Seven Years' War and the War of American Independence to the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars did much to drive Franceout of the North Atlantic.The second was anti-slavery and the rise of a new moral conscience which challenged the right of Europeans to own slaves or to sacrifice the freedom of others to pursue national economic advantage.The third was the French Revolution itself, which not only raised French hopes of achieving the Rights of Man for its own citizens but also sowed the seeds of insurrection in the slave societies of the New World, leading to the loss of Saint-Domingue and the creation of the first black republic inHaiti at the beginning of the nineteenth century. This proved critical to the economy of the French Caribbean, driving both colons and slaves from Saint-Domingue to seek shelter across the Atlantic world, and leaving a bitter legacy in the French Caribbean. It has also created an uneasy memory ofthe slave trade in French ports like Nantes, La Rochelle, and Bordeaux, and has left an indelible mark on race relations in France today.

Although trade connects distant people and regions, bringing cultures closer together through the exchange of material goods and ideas, it has not always led to unity and harmony.
