Under the pseudonym Eza Boto, Mongo Beti wrote Ville cruelle (Cruel City) in 1954 before he came to the world's attention with the publication of Le pauvre Christ de Bomba (The Poor Christ of Bomba). Cruel City tells the story of a young man's attempt to cope with capitalism and the rapid urbanization of his country. Banda, the protagonist, sets off to sell the year's cocoa harvest to earn the bride price for the woman he has chosen to wed. Due to a series of misfortunes, Banda loses both his crop and his bride to be. Making his way to the city, Banda is witness to a changing Africa, and as his journey progresses, the novel mirrors these changes in its style and language. Published here with the author's essay "Romancing Africa," the novel signifies a pivotal moment in African literature, a deliberate challenge to colonialism, and a new kind of African writing.

Strategies Of Medieval Communal Identity written by Wout Jac. van Bekkum and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Art categories.

The leading theme of this collection of essays and studies is the diversity of aspects of medieval communal identity. While the authors were selected for the very diversity of their interests, their final papers do tend to cohere around some recurrent themes. All of the studies in this volume touch upon one or more of the complex issues that lie at the heart of religious identity in the Middle Ages. They do so through concrete study of the very real practices by which medieval Jews, Christians and Muslims could police the perimeters of their spiritual communities. The authors were especially urged to note instances where religious identity was shaped without reference to dogmas, creeds, or sacred law. In no case are any of these papers satisfied with normative, legal definitions of Jew, Christian, or Muslim in medieval times. Sometimes small and subtle, sometimes explicit, dire, and violent, the techniques that emerge from these studies testify to the diversity of strategies of medieval communal identity over space and their changes over time.

Travel In The Middle Ages written by Jean Verdon and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003 with History categories.

As a companion to his previous volume Night in the Middles Ages, Jean Verdon offers insight into the pitfalls and perils of travelling during medieval times. Travel in the Middle Ages is filled with the stories and adventures of those who hazarded hostile landscapes, elements, and people - out of want or necessity - to get from place to place. Verdon contends that a journey in the current sense, suggesting both the movement of a person who travels to a fairly distant place and philosophical ideas of distraction and flight from self, did not exist in the Middle Ages. Indeed, he says, nothing either in the means of communication or in the landscape encouraged travel. And yet, Verdon points out, the world of the Middle Ages was one of unceasing movement.
