Alain Plessis

In the immediate aftermath of World War Two, the victors were unable to agree on Germany’s fate, and the separation of the country—the result of the nascent Cold War—emerged as a de facto, if provisional, settlement. Yet East and West Germany would exist apart for half a century, making the "German question" a central foreign policy issue—and given the war-torn history between the two countries, this was felt no more keenly than in France. Drawing on the most recent historiography and previously untapped archival sources, this volume shows how France’s approach to the German question was, for the duration of the Cold War, both more constructive and consequential than has been previously acknowledged.

This book explains how the media helped to invent the European Union as the supranational polity that we know today. Against normative EU scholarship, it tells the story of the rise of the Euro-journalists – pro-European advocacy journalists – within the post-war Western European media. The Euro-journalists pioneered a journalism which symbolically magnified the technocratic European Community as the embodiment of Europe. Normative research on the media and European integration has focused on how the media might help to construct a democratic and legitimate European Union. In contrast, this book aims to deconstruct how journalists – as part of Western European elites – played a key role in elite European identity building campaigns.

Reassessing The Role Of Management In The Golden Age written by Daniela Felisini and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-03-25 with Political Science categories.

This book provides a critical reassessment of the role of the public sector during the Golden Age in both advanced and emerging economies. Contributions focus on a major player in the setting of mixed economies: the top managers of state-owned enterprises. Bringing together world-renowned scholars, this collection analyzes the actions of these managers and their contribution to the rise and fall of the mixed economy during the Golden Age, opening up a comparative perspective of the topic. The book forces readers to reconsider how crucial state-owned enterprises were for economic recovery and for the modernization of the production apparatus of many countries in Western Europe, India, Latin America and South Africa. Key chapters discuss state-owned enterprises in twentieth-century Europe, the managerial revolution in Italy, the role of the state in Argentine industrialization, and the organization of capital in the Indian economy. This insightful collection will appeal to scholars and students with an interest in economic history and the socio-economic impact of state-owned companies around the globe.

Firm Strategies And Public Policy In Integrated Europe 1950 1980 written by Marine Moguen-Toursel and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Business & Economics categories.

This collection of papers derives from the multidisciplinary workshop of young researchers which took place in Louvain-la-Neuve on 11-13 June 2003. It is based on actual case studies in the sectors of transport, data-processing and telecommunications between the 1950s and the 1980s. It analyses the long and difficult process for those involved in building «expertise» in the new field of an integrated Europe. At the same time as firms discovered the importance of influencing the decision-making process at work, they were given a place in this participative process. This new role implies the accumulation of enlarged technical competencies and the multiplication of contacts with other economic actors. Together, they have taken part in the demarcation of the Community framework, through the elaboration of technical standards, tax harmonisation, state aids regulation, and so on, and have defended their interests in this framework as best they could. This could provoke strong opposition, which was difficult to overcome. In this case, a process of learning and understanding was necessary on both sides in order to advance Community harmonisation.
