La question dite ethnique est apparemment au cœur de toutes les crises en Afrique : le Rwanda en 1994, la Côte d'Ivoire, le Congo ou le Burundi aujourd'hui. Pourtant la définition de ce qu'on appelait autrefois " les races " ou " les tribus " reste le plus souvent floue, énigmatique ou contradictoire. Autant les " ethnies " reviennent comme des évidences dans les médias, autant les historiens et les autres chercheurs en sciences sociales ont multiplié les remises en cause de ce concept et surtout de son utilisation rigide dans l'africanisme classique. Les trente études réunies ici analysent les dynamiques historiques qui ont forgé les consciences ethniques comme toutes les autres " communautés imaginées ". La complexité des constructions collectives, sociales et politiques propres à chaque région d'Afrique a été artificiellement simplifiée et figée dans les lectures et les pratiques coloniales qui ont souvent été intériorisées bon gré mal gré par les colonisés euxmêmes. Les dernières décennies ont été marquées par des sortes de résurgences de ce passé, correspondant en fait à des stratégies politiques et à des montages idéologiques très actuels. La conscience et la mobilisation ethniques, proches en cela du mouvement des nationalités dans l'Europe du XIXe siècle, sont profondément impliquées par les enjeux politiques et sociaux des Etats contemporains. Chaque situation demande donc un décryptage de l'ethnicité concernée, entre les héritages culturels d'un passé parfois très ancien, le legs de l'emprise coloniale et les adhésions ou les manipulations du temps présent. Dans la fièvre des affirmations identitaires actuelles et le réveil d'une ethnicité à l'échelle planétaire, les " ethnies " africaines n'échappent pas aux tentations de l'ethnisme. Les cas étudiés dans ce livre par un groupe d'historiens européens et africains méritent toujours d'être médités.

A lot of what we know about “exotic languages” is owed to the linguistic activities of missionaries. They had the languages put into writing, described their grammar and lexicon, and worked towards a standardization, which often came with Eurocentric manipulation. Colonial missionary work as intellectual (religious) conquest formed part of the Europeans' political colonial rule, although it sometimes went against the specific objectives of the official administration. In most cases, it did not help to stop (or even reinforced) the displacement and discrimination of those languages, despite oftentimes providing their very first (sometimes remarkable, sometimes incorrect) descriptions. This volume presents exemplary studies on Catholic and Protestant missionary linguistics, in the framework of the respective colonial situation and policies under Spanish, German, or British rule. The contributions cover colonial contexts in Latin America, Africa, and Asia across the centuries. They demonstrate how missionaries dealing with linguistic analyses and descriptions cooperated with colonial institutions and how their linguistic knowledge contributed to European domination.

How do people live in a country that has experienced rebellions and state-organised repressions for decades and that is still marked by routine forms of violence and impunity? What do combatants do when they are not mobilised for war? Drawing on over ten years of fieldwork conducted in Chad, Marielle Debos explains how living by the gun has become both an acceptable form of political expression and an everyday occupation. Contrary to the popular association of violence and chaos, she shows that these fighters continue to observe rules, frontiers and hierarchies, even as their allegiances shift between rebel and government forces, and as they drift between Chad, Libya, Sudan and the Central African Republic. Going further, she explores the role of the globalised politico-military entrepreneurs and highlights the long involvement of the French military in the country. Ultimately, the book demonstrates that ending the war is not enough. The issue is ending the 'inter-war' which is maintained and reproduced by state violence. Despite the widespread trends of secularization in the 20th century, religion has played an important role in several outbreaks of genocide since the First World War.
