Catalans malgré tout. Ou comment les Catalans, réfugiés en France sous la pression des événements politiques qui ont secoué l'Espagne tout au long du XXe siècle, ont su maintenir, surtout dans la période entre 1939 et 1977, une identité politique et culturelle forte en dépit d'une position minoritaire au sein de l'exil espagnol. Le travail de Phryné Pigenet repose sur une exploitation de sources variées, françaises et catalanes, publiques (Archives, Arxius, Services Historiques, Ministères, Casals...) et privées. Elle a travaillé également sur des sources orales. Loin du langage froid de l'administration, les témoignages recueillis, abondamment cités, laissent transparaître toute la difficulté à évoquer les vécus douloureux. la volonté de "s'en sortir" dans la société d'accueil, la permanence des fondamentaux de leur identité : la langue, la culture, l'attachement aux valeurs républicaines. Le livre s'articule en 7 chapitres chronologiques : les exils d'avant 1939, le choc de la guerre civile, le traumatisme de la Retirada, la mémoire collective et l'identité partagée des exilés républicains, la nécessaire insertion puis à partir de 1945 les destinées politiques de l'exil républicain et les spécificités catalanes, enfin la culture catalane comme enjeu du combat antifranquiste. A travers l'exemple catalan, l'ouvrage interroge la construction des mémoires et des communautés d'exil (participant ainsi au débat qui agite actuellement la sphère intellectuelle), et les processus d'insertion au feu des expériences fondatrices et de celles vécues dans le pays d'accueil (participant ainsi au débat qui agite actuellement la sphère politique).

Aquest aplec de cartes recull les que Ferran Soldevila va enviar a diferents corresponsals, entre els quals trobem la flor i nata de la intel·lectualitat del seu temps. En els seus fons personals conservà poques còpies de les lletres que havia tramès i per això va ser necessari fer una recerca d’anys per obtenir les que aquí reproduïm. Va caldre anar a mirar, un per un, els arxius de familiars, amics i col·legues per si hi trobàvem cartes seves. El període que abasten és molt llarg. En tenim de totes les etapes de la seva vida: des de les escrites ja en la seva primera joventut fins a les redactades en els darrers anys d’existència. Per això les hem publicat per ordre cronològic. Així, el lector pot seguir el fil vital del nostre protagonista com si llegís una mena de biografia, amb l’avantatge que s’hi recullen els moments més importants de la seva trajectòria personal i professional, juntament amb detalls i aspectes molt difícils de veure en les reconstruccions biogràfiques corrents. Les notes a peu de pàgina que hi hem introduït serveixen per a aclarir algun aspecte del contingut de les cartes, per a situar el lector en el context en què foren redactades i per a fer saber el vincle existent amb el seu corresponsal. D’aquesta manera, pensem que el llibre no és tan sols una eina de consulta, sinó que es pot llegir de principi a fi, amb un interès creixent. Una lectura que no exigeix un coneixement previ del personatge i que pot servir perfectament d’introducció al conjunt de la seva obra. En el present recull epistolar podem seguir de manera detallada l’evolució de la seva escriptura, veure com progressivament defineix un model de llengua propi i un estil literari personal. No en va, Ferran Soldevila fou un dels escriptors més rellevants del seu temps. Aquí hem considerat la correspondència com una part no pas menor del conjunt de la seva producció escrita. Cal recordar que, a part de l’obra historiogràfica, conreà també la poesia, el teatre, el periodisme i la narrativa de ficció. La seva prosa es convertí en un model de normalitat d’expressió, com remarcà l’escriptor i editor Miquel Arimany, i la seva Història de Catalunya va ser, segons Joan Fuster, «la millor visió de conjunt del passat català que s’hagi escrit».

This volume helps us to understand that the current political disorders in Catalonia have deep cultural roots. It focuses on the rise of Catalan cultural, national and linguistic identity in the 20th century. What is happening in Catalonia? What lies behind its political conflicts? Catalan identity has been evolving for centuries, starting in early medieval ages (11th and 12lve centuries). It is not a modern phenomenon. The emergence of imperial Spain in the 16 c. and the French Ancien Régime in the 17 c. correlates with a decline of Catalan culture, which was politically absorbed by the Spanish state after the conquest of Barcelona in 1714. However, Catalan language and culture flourished again under the stimulus of the European Romantic Nationalism movement (known as the Renaixença in Catalonia). During the first Dictatorship (Primo de Rivera, 1923-1930), the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), and the long Francoist era (1939-1975), Catalan language and culture were repressed, yet refurbished and reconstructed at the same time. This rise of a plural, complex, and non-homogeneous Catalan identity constitutes the subject matter of this volume. National conflicts that emerged later in the Spanish democratic state leant heavily on the life engagement and vital commitment experienced by the entrenched intellectual movements of the twentieth century in Catalonia, Valencian Country and the Balearic Islands. This book reveals the cultural and literary grassroots of these conflicts.
