Essai Scientifique de l’année 2016 dans le domaine Histoire globale - Antiquité, note: 18,5, Université de Fribourg - Universität Freiburg (Schweiz) (Faculté des Lettres, Chaire d'Histoire de l'Antiquité), cours: L'éducation à Rome, langue: français, résumé: Si l’éducation des garçons dans la Rome antique fait l’objet de nombreuses sources et a été largement analysée par les historiens contemporains, la situation est tout autre en ce qui concerne l’éducation des filles dans l’Antiquité romaine, et cela pour plusieurs raisons. La première, et non la moindre, touche au peu de sources antiques traitant de l’instruction des filles à Rome. D’autre part, la proportion de filles scolarisées était bien inférieure à celle des garçons, ce qui explique aussi qu’on trouve moins d’écrits des auteurs anciens à ce propos. Ce n’est que récemment que les historiens ont commencé à se pencher spécifiquement sur la question de l’éducation des filles et des femmes de la Rome antique en tant que sujet à part entière. Si nous savons que l’éducation des garçons s’est d’abord inspirée de la culture hellénistique avant d’évoluer vers des formes proprement romaines, qu’en est-il des buts et des évolutions dans la formation des filles ? Et quelles étaient les opinions des auteurs antiques à ce propos ? Ce présent travail vise à montrer les changements progressifs au niveau de l’instruction des filles en mettant ceux-ci en parallèle avec les objectifs de l’éducation féminine à l’aide de sources d’auteurs de l’époque, soutiens ou critiques. Pour des raisons touchant principalement aux sources, qui ne parlent que peu, voire pas, d’éducation de la plèbe, nous nous concentrerons sur les femmes des classes supérieures, de Cornelia, mère des Gracques, au IIe siècle avant J.-C. jusqu’à Calpurnia, l’épouse de Pline le Jeune, au IIe siècle après J.-C. Cette périodisation nous permettra ainsi d’appréhender les grands changements survenus lors du passage de la République au principat, peu avant le début de notre ère.

This edited volume groups research on the significance of ancient feet and footwear, much of which was presented, discussed and reviewed at the conference: Shoes, Slippers and Sandals: Feet and Footwear in Antiquity, held at Newcastle University and the Great North Museum from 29 June–1 July 2015. Ancient dress and adornment have received significant consideration in recent scholarship, though, strikingly, feet and footwear have featured relatively little in this discussion. This volume aims to rectify this imbalance through its fifteen chapters covering a wide range of aspects associated with feet and footwear in classical antiquity.
