French And German Gothic Fiction In The Late Eighteenth Century written by Daniel Hall and has been published by Peter Lang this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with Literary Criticism categories.

The literature of terror and horror continues to fascinate readers both casual and more critical, and it has long been recognised as an international, not merely British, phenomenon. This study provides an in-depth and text-based analysis of Gothic fiction in France and Germany from earlier literary traditions, through the influence of the English Gothic novel, to an extraordinary popularity and dominance by the end of the eighteenth century. It examines how some of the motifs most closely associated with the Gothic - secret societies, the supernatural and suspense, among others - are the product of an uncertain age, and how the use of those motifs differed not just across languages and borders, which in fact the Gothic often crossed with ease, but according to the views, concerns and sometimes insecurities of individual authors. What emerges is a complex genre more diverse than any 'list of Gothic ingredients' would have us believe. Many of the notions and devices explored by the French and German Gothic then continue to intrigue, disturb and unsettle today.

A History Of Twentieth Century African Literatures written by Oyekan Owomoyela and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1993-01-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

African literatures, says volume editor Oyekan Owomoyela, "testify to the great and continuing impact of the colonizing project on the African universe." African writers must struggle constantly to define for themselves and other just what "Africa" is and who they are in a continent constructed as a geographic and cultural entity largely by Europeans. This study reflects the legacy of colonialism by devoting nine of its thirteen chapters to literature in "Europhone" languages—English, French, and Portuguese. Foremost among the Anglophone writers discussed are Nigerians Amos Tutuola, Chinua Achebe, and Wole Soyinka. Writers from East Africa are also represented, as are those from South Africa. Contributors for this section include Jonathan A. Peters, Arlene A. Elder, John F. Povey, Thomas Knipp, and J. Ndukaku Amankulor. In African Francophone literature, we see both writers inspired by the French assimilationist system and those influenced by Negritude, the African-culture affirmation movement. Contributors here include Servanne Woodward, Edris Makward, and Alain Ricard. African literature in Portuguese, reflecting the nature of one of the most oppressive colonizing projects in Africa, is treated by Russell G. Hamilton. Robert Cancel discusses African-language literatures, while Oyekan Owomoyela treats the question of the language of African literatures. Carole Boyce Davies and Elaine Savory Fido focus on the special problems of African women writers, while Hans M. Zell deals with the broader issues of publishing—censorship, resources, and organization.

Influence In Art And Literature written by Goran Hermeren and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-08 with Art categories.

This is a systematic study of the conceptual framework used by critics and scholars in their discussions of influence in art and literature. Göran Hermerén explores the key questions raised in scholarly debate on the topic: What is meant by "influence"? What methods can be used to settle disagreements about influence? What reasons could be used to support or reject statements about artistic and literary influence? The book is based on descriptive analyses in which the author has tried to make explicit what is said or implied in a number of quotations from scholarly writings on art and literature. Throughout, the emphasis is on clarifying the assumptions on which the use of the concept of influence is based, thus describing the limitations and merits of this kind of comparative research for critics and scholars. Originally published in 1975. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Aloysius Bertrand S Gaspard De La Nuit Beyond The Prose Poem written by Valentina Gosetti and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-03-22 with Foreign Language Study categories.

Aloysius Bertrand’s Gaspard de la Nuit (1842) is a familiar title to music lovers, thanks to Ravel’s piano work of the same name, and to specialists of French literature, especially those interested in Baudelaire’s prose poetry. Yet until very recently the collection and its author have generally been viewed almost exclusively through the prism of their pioneering role in the development of the prose poem. By placing Bertrand back in his original context, adopting a comparative approach and engaging with recent critical work on the collection, Valentina Gosetti proposes a substantial reassessment of Gaspard de la Nuit and promotes a new understanding of Bertrand in his own terms, rather than those of his successors. Through his playful and ironic reinterpretation of Romantic clichés, and his overt defiance of the boundaries of poetry and beauty, Bertrand emerges as a fascinating figure in his own right. This book is one of the first full-length studies of Bertrand’s work, and it will be of particular interest to specialists of the nineteenth century and of provincial literature, and to students of nineteenth-century poetry or the fantastic.
