L'accroissement considérable de l'offre de ressources numérisées dans les bibliothèques françaises est un phénomène récent dont les répercussions, encore mal connues, intéressent autant les bibliothécaires que les sociologues. Qui sont les usagers qui se saisissent de cette offre nouvelle ? Dans les bibliothèques, les " nouvelles technologies " sont-elles à l'origine d'une offre culturelle au périmètre bien délimité ? Comment les usagers utilisent-ils ces outils ? Quelles sont leurs attentes ? La diversification de l'offre des bibliothèques publiques a-t-elle entraîné une diversification des publics ? L'étude menée par Emmanuel Pedler et Olivier Zerbib (EHESS de Marseille) apporte des réponses nuancées à ces questions récurrentes en replaçant l'usage des cédéroms et d'Internet dans le contexte plus large des pratiques culturelles. À partir d'observations et d'enquêtes réalisées à la Bibliothèque nationale de France et dans des bibliothèques municipales de taille et d'importance diverses, elle s'interroge sur le rôle joué par les bibliothèques à l'égard de ces nouveaux outils.
