Parmi les mouvements anticoloniaux arabes et africains le nationalisme marocain présente des particularités incontestables qui ne cessent d’intriguer les observateurs. Ce livre tente d’expliquer ces particularités en analysant en détail la structure socio-politique du Maroc précolonial et les conséquences contradictoires des réformes par lesquelles le pays essaya d’échapper à la tutelle étrangère. À la fois mouvement et idéologie, le nationalisme apparaît dans cette perspective comme l’expression d’un choix : celui de la rénovation dans la conservation. Peut-on généraliser à partir du cas marocain ? Si oui, le nationalisme aurait une dimension culturelle qui jusqu’ici a été grandement sous-estimée. Pour cette raison, sa rémanence serait plus grande et sa force de contestation plus ambiguë que ne le laisserait penser une analyse strictement sociologique.

This book intends to review the meaning of contemporary in Arab intellectual history. It presents a classification of four periods in modern Arab intellectual history; they are the following: 1) Nahda: the great Arab renaissance period, from 1850 to 1914. The Nahda sought through translation and vulgarization to assimilate the great achievements of modern European civilization; 2) the period between the two wars characterized by the the development of thoughts which played a leading role in social movements, especially in nationalist movements; 3) the period the Arab nationalist experiments on the unionist ideology; and 4) the period of moral and political crisis after the defeat in the 1967 War. The central thesis of this book is that the concept of history - a concept playing a capital role in modern thought - is in fact peripheral to all the ideologies that have dominated the Arab world till now.

L'attachement à l'Islam et le respect de la tradition, n'ont pas seulement garanti une identité et une souveraineté ; ils continuent d'imprégner le processus de modernisation, entamé bien avant le Protectorat, au point d'inspirer - encore largement - l'esprit du régime, le fonctionnement complexe du système, et les règles subtiles du jeu politique actuel. Autoritaire et libéral à la fois, jouant des tensions multiples d'une société composite pour en préserver la stabilité et l'unité, puisant dans la tradition les moyens d'assumer la modernité en gardant son identité, le Maroc semble se nourrir de ces contradictions - ou de ces ambivalences - pour intégrer le changement social dans la continuité d'un certain ordre politique.
