Eugenio Pacelli, Pope Pius XII, is one of the most studied but least understood popes of the twentieth century while his pontificate remains the most turbulent and controversial. Although there is a general consensus that he faced serious problems during his tenure--fascist aggression, the Second World War, the Nazi genocide of the Jews, the march of communism, and the Cold War--there is disagreement on his response to these developments. Après Feuerbach ou Freud, l'impact de ces représentations sur l'imaginaire religieux n'est plus à démontrer, pas plus que ne l'est la sublimation qui génère la création d'entités spirituelles. Mais l'intervention récente d'un philosophe anglais, Richard Swinburne de l'université d'Oxford, spécialiste de Thomas d'Aquin, rouvre à propos d'Auschwitz une plaie béante au sein de l'antijudaïsme chrétien quand ce philosophe thomiste proclame, et ce sans l'ombre d'une hésitation: "Cela devait être horrible d'être gardien à Auschwitz. Les victimes ne peuvent pas nier qu'elles ont de quoi être reconnaissantes ; en effet, dans la situation atroce qu'est la leur, si elles font de bons choix, elles peuvent accéder à la sainteté." Le vieux thème de la souffrance rédemptrice refait brutalement surface chez ce théologien classique pour, une fois encore, minimiser l'importance de ce qui fut, comme l'ont écrit tous les témoins, rupture de civilisation... À travers cette réflexion conjuguant théologie et philosophie, sociologie et psychologie, Christian Thys et Jean van der Hoeden ont cru opportun de rouvrir le dossier du contentieux judéo-chrétien qui s'étend depuis les origines juives du christianisme jusqu'aux revirements plus récents du Vatican, et ce de manière à mettre en lumière l'apport juif dans la connaissance du Jésus historique et la fécondité de la pensée des survivants ou des penseurs qui s'inspirent de Lévinas, et dont les réflexions s'ouvrent au mystère de l'"autre", de l'exclu, de l'exilé, de l'hérétique.
