Théophile Gautier produit plusieurs textes d'inspiration archéologique comme la nouvelle Arria Marcella (1852) ayant pour cadre Pompéi ou Le Roman de la Momie racontant l'histoire d'une jeune Égyptienne au temps des Pharaons. De la reconstitution du passé grâce aux traces archéologiques à la question des traces que Paris laissera dans cent, mille ou cinq mille ans, il n'y a qu'un pas régulièrement franchi par les écrivains. Les ruines futures de Paris sont un terrain d'exploration pour les auteurs rassemblés dans cette anthologie.
