Ce livre éclaire simultanément les processus d'islamisation de l'Afrique et d'africanisation de l'islam. Il analyse les multiples configurations dans lesquelles les musulmans d'Afrique inscrivirent leur action depuis plus d'un millénaire. Récusant la vision d'un Islam étranger à l'Afrique et dont l'expansion suivrait un modèle linéaire, l'historien américain David Robinson décrit la formation d'espaces musulmans originaux, dans des contextes particuliers, qui étaient soit païens, soit chrétiens, soit même déjà musulmans. Il raconte les luttes menées dans un esprit de réforme et d'où naquirent le sultanat du Maroc ou le califat de Sokoto (Nigeria). Il montre la façon dont l'islam était pratiqué en bonne entente avec des rois païens comme dans l'Ashanti (Ghana) ou dans un contexte de compétition comme au Buganda (Ouganda) où ils se trouvaient confrontés à des néophytes chrétiens. Autre cas étudié, celui de l'Éthiopie où l'islam coexista plus ou moins bien avec le christianisme, religion revendiquée des milieux dirigeants, alors qu'une première pénétration venant de La Mecque avait atteint cette région en 615, peu avant l'Hégire. L'ouvrage se termine par des chapitres sur l'État du Mandi au Soudan et sur la confrérie transnationale des Mourides au Sénégal, ainsi que sur la place des Africains dans l'islam contemporain : ils forment actuellement le quart de la population musulmane mondiale. Tout au long de récits très vivants, le lecteur est guidé par des cartes et des illustrations. Chaque chapitre est suivi de conseils de lectures complémentaires, mettant en regard les bibliographies anglophones et francophones, ce qui fait de cet ouvrage un excellent outil de travail pour les étudiants, les enseignants et les chercheurs.

Dès le tout début des années 1980, les auteurs posaient le problème du politique par le bas en Afrique. Ils soulignaient le rôle des " petits ", des " sans importance ", des " en bas du bas " dans l'invention de formes originales de l'Etat, alors même que prévalaient au sud du Sahara des situations autoritaires. Mais ils s'interdisaient aussi de postuler l'existence d'une " culture populaire ", en reprenant à leur compte les critiques formulées à l'encontre de cette notion. Ils proposaient pour leur part une problématique de l'énonciation du politique, seule à même de restituer l'historicité du politique dans sa complexité et son ambivalence. Leurs analyses ont marqué le renouvellement des études africaines et ont reçu une large audience bien au-delà de ces dernières. Réunies en 1992 dans un volume qui fit date mais qui était épuisé depuis plusieurs années, elles sont aujourd'hui reprises, alors que de nombreux travaux redécouvrent la portée de l'approche du " politique par le bas " et la mettent en perspective avec les subaltern studies indiennes, l'Alltagsgeschichte allemande, la microstoria italienne ou l'historiographie marxiste anglaise. Dans cette nouvelle édition augmentée, une préface inédite montre en quoi elle demeure utile pour comprendre le monde contemporain en dehors des facilités de pensée. A condition de voir qu'elle n'a jamais prétendu être une " école ", mais un simple état d'esprit, une forme d'hétérodoxie par rapport aux courants établis des sciences sociales, une expression de cynisme heuristique vis-à-vis des croyances et des convenances académiques ou politiques.

The culmination of 15 years of research by a Turkish psychologist who was educated in the West, this volume examines both the theoretical and practical aspects of cross-cultural psychology. It takes a contextual-developmental-functional approach linking the child, family, and society as they are embedded in culture. A refreshingly different view, the author presents a portrait of human development from "the other side"--from the perspective of the "majority world." In a world seemingly dominated by American psychology, she proposes the cross-cultural orientation as a corrective to the culture-boundedness of much of Euro-American psychology. Analyzing human development in context while avoiding the pitfalls of extreme relativism, this work studies development with an inclusive, holistic, and ecological perspective, focusing on the development of the self and of competence. In so doing, it also attempts to combine cultural contextualism with universalistic standards and psychological processes. It proposes a theory of family change which challenges some commonly held modernization assumptions, and links theory and application while examining the role of psychology in inducing social change.
