Les XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles représentent l'âge d'or des « philosophes de la vie ». « C'en est fini de toute cohésion », pressent non sans angoisse John Donne. De fait, la « cosmographie théologique », le « théâtre de l'univers » perdent de leur prestige devant le « spectacle du monde » et le « petit monde » de l'homme, toujours explorés plus avant grâce aux progrès dans toutes les sciences, de l'astronomie à l'anatomie. À bien des égards, des « scrutateurs » comme Montaigne, Gracián, La Fontaine et les esprits de cette famille jusqu'à Nietzsche au moins, sont les précurseurs des existentialistes, les promoteurs du saisissant fragment littéraire, si bien accordé aux temps modernes. Ceux que l'usage désigne de moralistes et que Montaigne, plus profondément, nomme les « spectateurs de la vie » observent avec une exceptionnelle acuité le retour de la « sagesse humaine » du « ciel [...] vers l'homme ». Leur « lieu » n'est plus en surplomb, mais en retrait. C'est, comme le voudra Chamfort, par rapport au « théâtre du monde », la loge ; par rapport à la nature et à la condition humaines, c'est le cabinet d'étude du « naturaliste ». Placée non moins directement sous le patronage du Nietzsche de la Généalogie de la morale, la présente enquête reconstitue, dans une perspective résolument européenne et interdisciplinaire, la genèse du regard sur l'homme en son théâtre qui est au principe de toutes les « sciences humaines » de notre temps. The Sounds of Early Cinema is devoted exclusively to a little-known, yet absolutely crucial phenomenon: the ubiquitous presence of sound in early cinema. "Silent cinema" may rarely have been silent, but the sheer diversity of sound(s) and sound/image relations characterizing the first 20 years of moving picture exhibition can still astonish us. Whether instrumental, vocal, or mechanical, sound ranged from the improvised to the pre-arranged (as in scripts, scores, and cue sheets). The practice of mixing sounds with images differed widely, depending on the venue (the nickelodeon in Chicago versus the summer Chautauqua in rural Iowa, the music hall in London or Paris versus the newest palace cinema in New York City) as well as on the historical moment (a single venue might change radically, and many times, from 1906 to 1910).
