Le monde moderne a de plus en plus de difficultés à déchiffrer l'héritage traditionnel des sciences sacrées. Cet ouvrage traite de la signification des symboles relatifs aux grandes traditions sacrées antiques et contemporaines. Très variés, les symboles peuvent être des signes graphiques, idéographiques, numériques, géométriques, linguistiques, etc. Les articles d'un tel dictionnaire ne peuvent être exhaustifs, pour la simple raison qu'un symbole qualifié d'universel est sémantiquement illimité. Cependant, l'originalité de ce thésaurus tient au fait qu'il existe un fondement commun à tous les symboles : la clef. Celle-ci permet d'aboutir à la conclusion qu'il existe une unité fondamentale de la pensée, au-delà de tout particularisme. Sur la base de cette clef et de ses différentes combinaisons, chaque article est constitué par - une définition générale du symbole évoquant ses différentes acceptions dans ses usages traditionnels ; - différents points liés à la spécificité du symbole selon qu'il relève de domaines particuliers : tradition et/ou religion, civilisation vivante ou disparue, linguistique, arithmétique, etc. - des dessins, des diagrammes, des graphiques et des schémas explicatifs accompagnant chaque article. Cet ouvrage érudit et passionnant est un outil indispensable à tout lecteur désireux de " comprendre " les symboles dans lesquels s'enracine toute culture humaine.
