Cet ouvrage est une étude d'anthropologie interprétative concernant les trois composantes sociales touarègues autonomes de la région de Tombouctou au Mali. La recherche de leurs origines constitue l'objet de ce travail, appréhendée suivant une analyse historique, fondée sur une étude comparative intégrant les cultures proche et moyen-orientales. Cette approche permet d'avancer des critiques relatives à l'origine libyenne des Touaregs, une construction idéologique entretenue depuis l'époque des premiers explorateurs occidentaux. Après avoir identifié les nombreux traits culturels touaregs d'origine islamique dans les conceptions et les représentations de l'homme et du monde, cette herméneutique culturelle s'intéresse aux traits d'origine non islamique. Ces derniers sont l'objet de comparaisons avec les traits culturels des Chrétiens arabes yéménites et des Sabéens dans une quête de leur sens, de leur remaniement et de leur itinéraire. Cette approche est confortée par l'analyse des récits d'historiens arabes, qui permet de retracer les migrations, d'authentifier les filiations généalogiques, les manuscrits, et de critiquer les traditions orales relatives aux origines des Touaregs. L'approche interprétative du syncrétisme religieux et de ses produits conforte les hypothèses à propos des origines orientales des Touaregs. Elle permet de comprendre la " tiédeur" religieuse de ces tribus, et la fonction de nombreux rituels et objets énigmatiques (voile du visage masculin, motif cruciforme). Cet important travail scientifique constitue une référence sur l'histoire ancienne des Touaregs. Les significations dévoilées par cette ethnologie compréhensive contribuent à compléter les recherches en anthropologie culturelle touarègue, loin des constructions et des projections idéologiques et fantasmatiques qui ont impliqué les Touaregs dans des enjeux et des conflits raciaux, linguistiques et religieux.

Cet ouvrage est consacré aux Touaregs Dag-Ghâli, important groupe tributaire qui réside dans la région de l'Ahaggar (ou Hoggar) dans l'extrême Sud algérien. Jusqu'alors la plupart des études concernant les Kel-Ahaggar envisageaient cette société à partir d'une analyse axée sur la seule caste des nobles. Il y a donc là un important renversement de perspective. Après une présentation des principales caractéristiques de la société Kel-Ahaggar (cadre géographique, structure sociopolitique, histoire...), l'auteur dégage les enjeux des récits d'origine propres aux Kel-Ahaggar. Dès lors, c'est le groupe Dag-Ghâli qui est au centre d'une analyse qui pose un problème central : qu'est-ce qu'une tribu touarègue ? Sont alors prises en compte les principales caractéristiques d'une tribu en tant qu'unité d'un système segmentaire. Parenté et résidence jouent ici un rôle déterminant. D'où une analyse qui s'attache, au-delà du discours tenu par les Dag-Ghâli, aux stratégies et aux pratiques réelles notamment en ce qui concerne les alliances matrimoniales.
