Si à diverses époques Zarathoustra, le prophète de l'ancien Iran, est revenu au plan de l'actualité ou que sous le nom grec de Zoroastre il hantait les doctrines dualistes, la magie et les occultismes, beaucoup ignorent encore l'envergure du personnage authentique qui se cache derrière les relations des auteurs classiques ou les connaissances de seconde main. Bien qu'on se tourne aujourd'hui volontiers vers les ascèses orientales, on méconnaît souvent la prodigieuse éthique fondée par celui qui subjuguait déjà Empédocle et Platon. Mais, si deux millénaires et demi de culture judéo-chrétienne ont effacé tout ce qui référait au grand prophète, une objectivité scientifique n'impose-t-elle pas de regarder enfin sans préjugés un passé spirituel aussi prestigieux et dont l'occultation, liée à la persécution des Gnostiques, a entraîné le christianisme dans un obscurantisme nécrosant ? Or, depuis l'œuvre d'Anquetil Duperron à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, seuls les cercles savants d'orientalistes et de philologues ont pu approcher les textes difficiles de l'Avesta et des « évangiles » de Zarathoustra, les Gâthâs. Travaux généralement ignorés du public qui ne connaît Zarathoustra que par l'œuvre percutante mais agnostique de Nietzsche où le Surhomme apparaît comme l'Antéchrist. Fidèle aux conclusions les plus récentes ou de sources inédites, l'auteur présente de manière exhaustive un vaste panorama comparatif de l'histoire de la pensée d'un des prophètes les plus ignorés de tous les temps. Pourtant, depuis l'époque achéménide jusqu'aux Sassanides, la plupart des grandes religions ont largement puisé aux sources du zoroastrisme dont l'expansion ésotérique s'opéra de l'Inde à l'Occident médiéval. Une conclusion nettement spiritualiste relève l'apport considérable qu'une pensée régénérée peut puiser de la révolution zoroastrienne dont l'influence fut primordiale sur de nombreux éléments essentiels de notre culture.
