L’odyssée des émigrants belges au Wisconsin au milieu du XIXe siècle « Les hautes forêts qui couvrent le pays ont un aspect qui, de prime abord, peut en faire considérer le défrichement comme impossible, tant les arbres y sont épais et gigantesques (...) se croisant en tous sens et formant des masses presque impénétrables. » Tel est le décor qui attend les quelques milliers d’émigrants belges qui, entre 1853 et 1856, fuient la misère des campagnes brabançonnes et hesbignonnes, et tentent l’aventure américaine dans le nord-est du Wisconsin. Après l’enfer de l’entrepont et les pièges des « trafiquants de passagers », ceux qui s’astreignent au défrichement ne sont pas au bout de leurs peines. Ils connaîtront un des pires incendies de forêt de l’histoire des Etats-Unis, et certains d’entre eux seront entraînés dans la guerre de Sécession. Mais à force de courage et de persévérance, et parfois avec l’aide des « sôvadjes » (sauvages, comme ils appellent les Indiens), ils parviendront au bien-être qu’ils ne pouvaient atteindre en Belgique. Aujourd’hui, leurs descendants constituent la plus grande communauté d’origine belge aux USA. Ils préservent un héritage fait de détails architecturaux, de recettes de cuisine et de quelques mots de patois wallon. Un ouvrage passionnant qui retrace au travers de nombreux témoignages l'aventure américaine de milliers de Belges à la recherche d'un Eldorado ! EXTRAIT New York ! Dans le récit de son voyage en décembre 1849, lorsqu’il accompagnait, à la demande du gouvernement belge, le premier groupe d’émigrants en route pour la colonie subsidiée de Sainte-Marie, en Pennsylvanie, le chirurgien-major N. Reiss rapporte : « Enfin (...) on vit terre du haut des mâts. Le lendemain de grand matin, le pilote vint à bord. Les passagers étaient tous sur le pont. Tous les regards étaient dirigés vers les hauteurs que l’on vit poindre à l’horizon. Mais la brise était faible, nous avançâmes lentement. Dans l’après-dinée des bateaux à vapeur-remorqueurs voltigèrent d’une manière agaçante autour de nous, enfin après de longs débats, l’un d’eux s’attella au navire. Un hourra vigoureux, trois fois répété par tous nos émigrants, salua cet heureux événement, et le soleil était à peine couché, que nous pénétrâmes au milieu de la flotte marchande, qui en rangs serrés, longe les quais de New-York. » À PROPOS DE L'AUTEUR Journaliste de formation, Daniel Dellisse travaille actuellement dans la presse syndicale après avoir collaboré pendant onze ans au journal Le Soir. Au mois d'août 1855, la région namuroise est secouée par de violentes émeutes. Des centaines d’habitants de la vallée de la Sambre cherchent à s’en prendre aux usines chimiques qui bordent la rivière. En cause, les vapeurs corrosives relâchées par les cheminées, qui tueraient la végétation et empoisonneraient les hommes. Plusieurs jours durant, l’armée est déployée pour protéger les fabriques de la colère des protestataires. En cherchant à mieux comprendre cet épisode étonnant, ce livre nous plonge dans les interrogations environnementales du 19e siècle. Alors que l’industrie belge vivait son âge d’or, les fumées et les gaz relâchés par les usines étaient déjà un sujet d’inquiétude. Bien plus, ils ont posé à la Belgique d’alors des questions d’une actualité criante, sur la place de l’industrie dans la société, le rôle à jouer par les États dans la régulation des pollutions ou les moyens à employer pour réduire les émissions. Retour sur une facette méconnue et pourtant essentielle de notre passé industriel... Julien Maréchal est historien à l’Université de Namur, membre du Pôle de l’histoire environnementale (PolleN). Ses recherches portent sur l’histoire des pollutions et des risques industriels.
