This benchmark publication documents the diversity and vitality of lesbian talent in Australia. A hitherto marginalised group, lesbian artists are now being incorporated into mainstream culture and this book provides a timely introduction to the issues explored by these artists, which include sexuality, mythology and religion, mass media and technology. The development of different modes of production through collaborative processes and collective art making is also discussed. The history of the emergence of lesbian art practice into contemporary culture is charted through documentation of alternative exhibition spaces, legislation, protest marches and events such as the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras held annually in Sydney. The acceptance of lesbian art as an art of difference rather than of community is examined. The diversity in lesbian art practice is highlighted through the variety of styles, art forms and practices which the author has uncovered. Performance art, film, video, computer generated imagery as well as painting, sculpture, graphic arts and craft reinforce the impression of a vital, imaginative body of work making an important contribution to late twentieth-century visual art. This book, with its theoretical discussion, historical overview and profiles of leading practitioners will be an invaluable resource for artists, students and teachers in art schools, women's, gender and queer studies, feminists, homosexuals and lesbians.

Women Together Women Apart written by Tirza True Latimer and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-08-24 with Social Science categories.

What does it mean to look like a lesbian? Though it remains impossible to conjure a definitive image that captures the breadth of this highly nuanced term, today at least we are able to consider an array of visual representations that have been put into circulation by lesbians themselves over the last six or seven decades. In the early twentieth century, though, no notion of lesbianism as a coherent social or cultural identity yet existed. In Women Together/Women Apart, Tirza True Latimer explores the revolutionary period between World War I and World War II when lesbian artists working in Paris began to shape the first visual models that gave lesbians a collective sense of identity and allowed them to recognize each other. Flocking to Paris from around the world, artists and performers such as Romaine Brooks, Claude Cahun, Marcel Moore, and Suzy Solidor used portraiture to theorize and visualize a "new breed" of feminine subject. The book focuses on problems of feminine and lesbian self-representation at a time and place where the rights of women to political, professional, economic, domestic, and sexual autonomy had yet to be acknowledged by the law. Under such circumstances, same-sex solidarity and relative independence from men held important political implications. Combining gender theory with visual, cultural, and historical analysis, Latimer draws a vivid picture of the impact of sexual politics on the cultural life of Paris during this key period. The book also illuminates the far-reaching consequences of lesbian portraiture on contemporary constructions of lesbian identity.

Lesbian Images In International Popular Culture written by Sara E. Cooper and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-09-13 with Social Science categories.

Lesbian images are everywhere these days–cable television, film, popular magazines, advertising, Internet and the news–creating desire in men and women alike, selling commercial products and services, and stirring up controversy on many levels. But do these images truly represent the diverse identities of women-centered women worldwide? This book addresses the limited access to images of diverse and international lesbian identities and experiences, in order to provide the reader with a more complete understanding of what it means to be lesbian in a global context. It investigates how lesbians portray themselves as well as how they are portrayed by others in several areas of popular culture, including television, film, the arts, Internet, advertising and the news. It features articles on U.S. lesbian cartoonists, Canadian viewer perceptions of lesbians on the cable show Queer as Folk, panoramic looks at lesbians' representation in Australian and Spanish television programming, and in-depth explorations of films by Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, leading Indian film producers, and independent Chinese-American filmmakers. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Lesbian Studies.

"The book is a contribution to the historical study of gay and lesbian art, yet calls for altering its parameters in ways that fully recognize social and cultural difference. It provides a chronological and conceptual framework for studying the tropes of 'homotextual' expression in a Latin American context. More than one hundred illustrations, gathered from various sources across Latin America, North America and Europe, allow the reader to personally witness this fascinating and, until now, concealed story."--BOOK JACKET.

Outlooks written by Peter Horne and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-09-09 with Art categories.

Outlook explores the relationship of lesbian and gay sexualities to visual representation. It reflects the richness of lesbian and gay ways of producing and reading visual cultures, at the same time as it tackles such burning issues as the advantage of adopting a queer perspective on past art, the responses of lesbian and gay artists to the AIDS crisis, and society's attempts to censor homosexual art. This volume provides a space for lesbian and gay artists to exhibit their work and discuss its relationship to sexuality. It allows for a wide ranging theoretical and historical discussion of the place of lesbian and gay men within visual cultures and shows how much has been missed by a heterosexist approach to art history and the study of culture. Richly illustrated, this book includes statements by contemporary lesbian and gay artists, photographers and performers as well as articles by art historians, cultural theorists and lesbians and gay activists.
