Christianity proposes claims that stand in some relation to history. This linkage was captured in an image proposed by G.E. Lessing in the 18th century when he spoke of an "ugly ditch" between historical and religious truths. There exists a "ditch" because of the conceptual divide between discrete, contingent occurrences and religious truths of a presumably universal significance. The "ditch" is ugly because there has been no obvious way of mediating this conceptually odd divide. This book aims to disclose the ways we have been misled or confused by the use of Lessing's image, the net effect of which is a series of misplaced theological battles due to an incorrect naming of the enemy. The book is an effort to untangle those issues intrinsically important yet debated in confusing ways; it is a piece of philosophical writing with a theological interest. The conclusion is that while this theological shadowboxing has been occurring, the crucial, substantive issue posed by Lessing's image has been neglected. This is the issue of historical revelation and its relation to natural modes of human knowing and apprehension.

This present study is the first in Engli Georg Wobbermin (1869-1943), who has been called a captain of the liberal rearguard. Widely read and discussed in his own lifetime, Wobbermin's theology fell into obscurity as dialectical theology rose to prominence in the years following the First World War. Faith at the Intersection of History and Experience presents the major themes of Wobbermin's theology, particularly his analysis of the relationship between faith and history and his development of a religio-psychological theological method that places faith at the intersection of history and experience. Wobbermin's critiques of recent and contemporary approaches to the problem of faith and history and his attention to theological method reveal a sustained effort to continue what he called the Luther-Kant-Schleiermacher line of Protestant theology. The consistent emphasis in Wobbermin's theology is on the systematic interrelation of objectivity and subjectivity, an approach he considered to be a faithful continuation of the Reformation, but one that invited conflict with the dialectical theologians, chiefly Karl Barth. Wobbermin's debates with Barth on issues of method reveal a vibrant and sophisticated liberal theology co-existing with the dialectical theology that is conventionally assumed to have eclipsed it over a decade earlier. Building on work that has been done primarily in German, this study of one of the forgotten theologians of the early twentieth century appears as more German, British, and American theologians and historians are returning to this period of theology with renewed interest and fresh questions, and it addresses an often neglected period of modern Protestant thought in histories currently available in English.

Modernity has been an age of revolutions—political, scientific, industrial and philosophical. Although only one aspect of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's diverse oeuvre, his religious thought had a significant influence on thinkers such as Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard, and present-day liberal Protestant theologians. His thought is particularly difficult to assess, however, because it is found largely in a series of essays, reviews, critical studies, polemical writings, and commentary on theological texts. Beyond these, his correspondence, and a few fragmentary essays unpublished during his lifetime, we have his famous drama of religious toleration, Nathan the Wise, and his philosophical-historical sketch, The Education of the Human Race. In these scattered texts, Lessing challenged the full range of theological views in the Enlightenment, from Protestant orthodoxy, with its belief in Biblical inerrancy, to a radical naturalism, which rejected both the concept of a divine revelation and the historically based claims of Christianity to be one, as well as virtually everything in between. Since he refused to identify himself with any of these parties, Lessing was an enigmatic figure, and a central question from his time to today is where he stood on the issue of the truth of the Christian religion. Now back in print, and with the addition of two supplementary essays, Henry E. Allison's book argues that, despite appearances, Lessing was not merely an eclectic thinker or intellectual provocateur, but a serious philosopher of religion, who combined a basically Spinozistic conception of God with a sophisticated pluralistic conception of religious truth inspired by Leibniz.
