This collection of 42 short English lessons focuses on specific American idioms and common phrases. The thematic chapters are organized into seven categories: Let's Get Started, Fun with Food, Body Language, Animal Wisdom, Colorful Language, How's the Weather, and Where Are You. Each concise self-contained chapter explores a single American idiom with clear definitions, sample sentences, short readings, comprehension checks, vocabulary lists, writing activities, and conversation questions. The comfortable pace, unit quizzes (with answer keys) and an index of American idioms and expressions also makes this book comfortable for both English classroom use and self-study. Written for high school ESL students and adult English language learners, this book can also improve the vocabulary and cultural literacy of intermediate English students. Understanding and using these American idioms will help immigrants sound more like their American neighbors. Idiom by idiom, readers and students will find speaking English less difficult and more fun - even "a breeze."

Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,7, University of Erfurt, language: English, abstract: Idioms are quite pleasant and fascinating linguistic phenomena to me. I connect idioms to a creative and competent use of language. Therefore, I can still remember the first idiom I learnt at school: It’s raining cats and dogs. At that time, it was just a funny gimmick during the English lesson. Today the study of English opens new vistas to this. Why isn’t it raining fish? Or one could as: Why isn’t it raining cats and dogs in Germany, but “Bindfäden” (twines)? In this presentation I want to engage in the field of idiomatic expressions containing animal names. As this group is unmanageably wide, I will concentrate on phraseological units that are connected to cats and dogs. After having given a short general linguistic overview of the field concerning idioms, I will concentrate on the possibilities of using idioms in primary class. I will not only give arguments for it but also present material one could use in class.

The Idiom Book was written for high-intermediate/advanced young adult and adult learners of English. The language used is very colloquial and is intended to represent the authentic linguistic expression of native speakers interacting socially in informal personal and professional contexts. Each lesson features 10 idioms. The book is divided into 101 lessons, with each lesson having four sections: - Section A introduces the idioms in the context of an idiomatic conversation. - Section B presents the same idioms in a different format, most in the form of written messages. The messages are gapped. Section C uses a matching exercise to increase the learning challenge. Section D has the students using the idioms in a given sentence substituting the idiom for a non-idiomatic phrase. The topics are varied and interesting. There is a list of idioms and an answer key available for download at ProLinguaLearning.com. An optional downloadable audio program for this book is also available.

[The following excerpt from the Introductiion gives a clear idea of the book's contents.] Idiomatic expressions give English its color and vitality. They are indispensable to the daily speech of the people and to the language of newspapers and books, television and movies. Whenever you hear a phrase whose meaning cannot be understood even if you know the definitions of the separate words involved, you have probably encountered an idiom. Mastering idioms requires a great deal of listening, studying, practice, and usage. You cannot ignore this part of the language: idiomatic expressions and more formal grammar should be given equal time. The lessons in this book are designed to teach you the kind of informal, everyday speech--including many slang words as well as idioms--that is commonly understood by all native Americans, no matter what their level of education. There are various levels of idiomatic difficulty, and each group of lessons listed in the Table of Contents begins with the easiest lessons and ends with the more advanced ones. However, you may use them in any order you desire; each lesson is self-contained. Each lesson begins with a dialogue, since idioms are best learned in meaningful verbal contexts. A vocabulary section then explains the idioms in clear, concise definitions. (Where the notation "neg." appears after an idiom, it means the idiom is generally used in the negative. For example, have the heart to (neg.) indicates the phrase is normally used in a negative statement such as "I didn't have the heart to tell her." Where alternate words are given in parentheses, either word may be used interchangeably. For example, down the drain (tubes) means you may say "down the drain" or "down the tubes." Two sets of exercises are included in each lesson. In the first, you are asked to choose the correct idiom needed to complete a sentence. In the second, you will substitute an idiomatic expression for an italicized phrase or sentence.

This book addresses many of the social issue's facing young adults today. They will interact with people who don't look like themselves, or have the same traditions, culture or orientation. Their quality of life as an adult may depend on many of the decisions they make today. In this book students will learn it's okay to be different and to accept all people as they are. To treat all people as you would want to be treated; with dignity and respect. To do your best and be the best you can be. To be humble and kind. To be patient. To love your family and friends. To do what is right and be a good person. To keep getting up every time you're knocked down; to not give up. That bullying and harassment are not okay. To understand that losing is part of a journey. That we gain knowledge from our loses and keep moving forward. The Marine Corps Core Values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment are presented to the reader as an example of how to conduct themselves with integrity, to do what is right, and to achieve a standard of excellence. This book uses Idioms (sayings) to provide a different perspective of the English language; words that say one thing but mean another. An example of a well know Idiom is the saying;" It's raining cats and dogs." The saying doesn't mean that dogs and cats are falling from the sky, but rather that it's raining very hard. The book is divided into four chapters, the sayings in each chapter are divided into three parts. The first part list the saying, the second part explains the meaning of the saying, and the third part provides an example that is relative to everyday experiences. The third part is what differentiates this book from other books on Idioms The first chapter provides lessons learned from everyday sayings. Sayings that most adults are familiar with, but unfamiliar to most young adults. The second chapter provides sayings on how to: save money, how to spend it, how to stretch it, how to budget it, and how to compound it. Money management is one of the most important skills that must be learned to be financially stable. The third chapter provides thoughts on leadership and character. Leadership; it's not about being the best, it's about making other people better. Chapter three is also about; positive thinking, not fearing failure (we all have failed from time to time), being decisive, and taking a stand. Chapter four concentrates on how we interact with family members, friends, boyfriends and girlfriends, and employers. Colonel Robert E Jackson is a retired United States Marine, a Vietnam Veteran and a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal for wounds sustained in combat. Col Jackson has advanced degrees from both Springfield College, and Georgia State University.
