Lessons from Lockdown explores the impact of COVID-19 on our schooling systems, on the young people and families that they serve and on all who work in – and with – our schools, and asks what the long-term ramifications of the pandemic might be for the pedagogy and purpose of formal education. Drawing on the voices of more than a hundred pupils, parents and professionals, it reveals how teachers and learners are adapting practice in areas such as curriculum modelling, parental engagement, assessment and evaluation and blended and online learning. In this timely new book, Tony Breslin draws on his experience as a teacher, researcher, examiner, school governor and policy influencer to assess what the educational legacy of COVID-19 could be, and the potential that it offers for reframing how we ‘do’ schooling. Whatever your place in this landscape, Lessons from Lockdown is a must-read for all concerned about the shape and purpose of schooling systems in mature economies – schooling systems and economies set on recovering from the kind of ‘system shock’ that the pandemic has delivered.

2020 was the year nobody expected. As the coronavirus pandemic swept across the globe, the UK, like most countries, was put into lockdown. This went on for months, with people unable to go to work or socialise outside of their immediate family. Everyone was encouraged to 'stay home and stay safe.' Rather than despair over the restrictions and drastic changes to day-to-day life, Marie-Claire Donnelly chose to view lockdown as a learning experience, to go deep within and find the silver lining in such an unexpected situation. The result of that experience is this delightful book full of both laughter and vulnerability, as well as journal prompts, affirmations, and heaps of love. With her unbreakable spirit and wicked sense of humour, MC shares not only her wisdom but also her loving heart as she walks us through her days of home schooling, learning to livestream on social media, mishaps with children and pets, and the importance of faith, self-acceptance, and ultimately, self-love. I am so grateful to myself for taking this time during lockdown to call out my old beliefs and stories and working on installing new, better-serving beliefs. I feel lighter, more positive and freer than I have ever done in my life. I look forward to inspiring others to do the same through sharing these lessons because every single person on this planet deserves to live an incredible life. - MC xxx

Schools closed indefinitely....The economy spiraling into recession.....People losing jobs.....The world in a global pandemic. This reality framed the lives of everyone on the planet during the first half of 2020. Ironically, New Year's Eve brought the usual hopes and resolutions of renewal and aspirations for a new decade. However, over the span of several weeks in the United States, there was no rebirth or renewal. There was death, despair and a looming fear of uncertainty associated with a novel virus called COVID-19 Coronavirus. The virus started in the Wuhan Hubei Province of China in the fall of 2019 but quickly spread to all parts of the globe. By March 2020, much of the United States was literally "shutdown" to adhere to "shelter in place" orders at federal, state, and local levels to slow the spread of the virus. By early April, the United States was the epicenter for the virus and deaths were mounting daily. Ayana and Marshall, representing a typical suburban American family, was no different from any other in the United States. Their lives came to a grinding pause. They still had each other and that is the most important thing. What they didn't have were daily school routines, commutes to work, volleyball tournaments, 7-on-7-football practice, or even trips to the mall. Marshall is a professor and research meteorologist at the University of Georgia. Ayana is a former management consultant for a firm in the Washington, D.C. area who manages the household, leads a Girl Scout Troop, and presides over the local high school volleyball booster club. Their teenage daughter plays volleyball, is on the student council, and active in many service organizations. Their preteen son is a typical Fortnite, NBA2K, sports-playing kid. It's a good family with all of the ups and downs of four different personalities under one roof. For several weeks, this family unit sheltered in place. Ayana and Marshall, representing a typical suburban American family, were no different from any other in the United States. Their lives came to a grinding pause during the Coronavirus "Quarantine." Ayana chronicled her thoughts in a daily Facebook post. From this social media diary, the authors captured and expanded upon their experiences and decided to share them others. Within these pages, Ayana and Marshall offer the "good, bad, and ugly" of lockdown while offering lessons learned, interpretations, and opportunities for the reader to engage and self-reflect. How much of your life do you see in their experience? All proceeds, beyond printing costs, to benefit local organizations supporting families and students.

During this unprecedented time of the 2020 global pandemic, Covid-19, the entire world was forced into a lockdown. Yet, in the midst of all of the trials and tribulations, for many believers in Jesus Christ, the scriptures were our source of comfort, security and solace. A renewed strength was found through private and corporate prayer. Daily, I searched the scriptures and found eighteen lockdowns in the Bible. Each lockdown brought fresh perspectives of our Sovereign God who is always in control and always able to bring His great purposes to fruition. Prayerful, I summoned 16 pastors from my concentric circle, 14 from across the United States and two from the global Christian family, to share their perspectives on each lockdown. We are so thankful for the contribution of these wonderful pastors, who in the midst of the pandemic, took the time to write and contribute to this book. \n \nI know that this book will bless you and encourage you to see God in the midst of a pandemic. Expert health care professionals have warned us that without a vaccine that this pandemic will come back perhaps with a stronger challenge. So, may these spiritual truths give you applicable principles and valuable lessons in how to sustain and rejoice in the midst of a lockdown and to turn to the all-knowing and all-powerful God.
