Excerpt from Lessons in Elementary Dynamics It seems to be pretty generally agreed that some branch of Physics should form an early, if not the very earliest part of a scientific education, involving, as it does, an examination of those general and fundamental properties which all kinds of matter possess to a greater or less extent and by which we recognise things as being forms of matter. Of the various branches into which Physics is divided. Mechanics has an undoubted claim to the first place, from the simplicity and exactness of its laws, the readiness with which they can be demonstrated, and the multitude of practical illustrations of them which meet us on every side in the ordinary movements of life, in games, and in work. The study of Chemistry or of Electricity may be more amusing and attractive on account of the brilliant experiments associated with it, but the exact explanation of chemical and electrical phenomena is far less easy and far less certain than that of mechanical laws, and is, indeed, hardly within the grasp of minds previously untrained in scientific methods and ideas. An endeavour is made in this book to explain some of the properties of matter, Newtons Laws of Motion, and the modern conceptions of Energy and Work, in such a manner as involves only the most elementary knowledge of mathematics. Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry: First Stage A few words will explain the scope and purpose of this little book. In 1898 a course of elementary physics and chemistry was introduced into the Code of the Education Department as a specific subject in which instruction could be given in the upper standards of elementary schools. The syllabus is divided into three parts, and the first of these is here dealt with. The course is well adapted for experimental work by indi vidual children, and, as it forms a satisfactory introduction to the study of science, it is suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as well as for pupils in the upper standards of elementary schools. Every teacher now understands the importance of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary. Unfortunately, it is not as yet always possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work.
