Meat written by Simon Fairlie and has been published by Chelsea Green Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-12-17 with Social Science categories.

Meat: A Benign Extravagance is a groundbreaking exploration of the difficult environmental, ethical and health issues surrounding the human consumption of animals. Garnering huge praise in the UK, this is a book that answers the question: should we be farming animals, or not? Not a simple answer, but one that takes all views on meat eating into account. It lays out in detail the reasons why we must indeed decrease the amount of meat we eat, both for the planet and for ourselves, and yet explores how different forms of agriculture--including livestock--shape our landscape and culture. At the heart of this book, Simon Fairlie argues that society needs to re-orient itself back to the land, both physically and spiritually, and explains why an agriculture that can most readily achieve this is one that includes a measure of livestock farming. It is a well-researched look at agricultural and environmental theory from a fabulous writer and a farmer, and is sure to take off where other books on vegetarianism and veganism have fallen short in their global scope.

It's time that the body reassumed its rightful place of importance in Christian life, according to Carl and LaVonne Braaten in The Living Temple. In this sourcebook for a healthier way to live, the authors discuss the body, the foods we put into it, and how Christians are to regard it. Although often slighted in Christian tradition, the body was not regarded by Paul and the early Church as "vile flesh" to be transcended, but as a living metaphor of Christ and his people and as the dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit. The body is thus to be cared for and revered. Later thinkers, including Luther, upheld this view. But today it is increasingly difficult to fulfill this biblical ideal. "Junk" food and drink can ravage the temple. Among the many practical aspects of the Braatens' discussion are: - What vital nutrients are currently being processed out of our foods and how they can be replaced - Natural medicine's to Christianity and the foods we eat - Common myths about American nutrition and why they just aren't true - The principal vitamins and minerals and the function of each in proper nutrition Select bibliographies for further reading and continuing discussion follow each chapter. The Living Temple is a sensible Christian application of one of our most vital concerns.

Few creations are more associated with joy or more symbolic of the sweet life than cake. After all, it is so much more than dessert. As a book about cake would demand, this one is a multilayered, amply frosted, delicious concoction with a slice (or more) for everyone. Let Me Eat Cake is not a book about baking cake, but about eating it. Author Leslie F. Miller embarks on a journey (not a journey cake, although it's in there) into the moist white underbelly of the cake world. She visits factories and local bakeries and wedding cake boutiques. She interviews famous chefs like Duff Goldman of Food Network's Ace of Cakes and less famous ones like Roland Winbeckler, who sculpts life-size human figures out of hundreds of pounds of pound cake and buttercream frosting. She takes decorating classes, shares recipes, and samples the best cakes and the worst. The book is held together by the hero on a quest, one that traces cake history and tradition. If we were to bake a cake to celebrate the birth of cake (cake is an Old Norse word, first used around 1230), it is hard to say how many candles would go on top. Though the meaning of the word (originally "lump of something"), not to mention our expectations of its ingredients, has changed over time, we now celebrate cake as the coming together of flour, sugar, butter, eggs, vanilla, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. And what a celebration. Baking a cake is hard work, but tasting it is pure pleasure. So put on some elastic-waist pants and grab a fork.

No-one's checking in right now, but the pandemic never was the problem at The Cloverluck. It's February 2021 and Texas is in a deep freeze. The ill-preparedness for coping with an extended cold snap is starkly laid bare as millions are without power for hours on end. For some of the millions affected, the results are catastrophic. For most, it's a serious irritation, but the incompetence that led to this will soon be forgotten once power is restored. For the skeleton staff working at the Covid-closed Cloverluck Hotel, the nightmare is just beginning. Built from Irish mob money in the 1920s on the site once occupied by the old electric chair in Austin, Texas, The Cloverluck Hotel seemed live up to its name with its Southern charm and the patronage of some well-rewarded local politicians, but none of these people ever understood that it was a consistently powered electric grid that kept at bay the dark secrets that lay beneath this hotel. Lise Mantell, the new under manager, desperate to have any job after her last humiliation, thinks she's turned a corner, but around that corner is the horror of death and duplicity, and it's all about to come to a shocking conclusion.
