This volume explores some of the global challenges and possible solutions for transcultural health and social care, and includes a selection of papers that were presented at the 2nd European Transcultural Nursing Association International Conference, in June 2011. This collection explores some of the challenges and possible solutions from the perspectives of various countries regarding promoting transcultural health and social care, including Ireland, Turkey, Strasbourg, the Philippines, the Netherlands, Sweden and Australia. As outlined in the papers included, the provision of transculturally competent care is challenging and requires knowledgeable, skilled and culturally sensitive health and social care professionals. The delivery of culturally competent care requires a commitment from health and social care services, professionals working within these services, and institutes of education responsible for educating healthcare professionals to understand and be responsive to the needs of culturally diverse patients. Learned behaviour and deeply rooted values must be challenged to address unwitting prejudices and stereotyping. Attention should focus on creating an environment of trust where critical reflection occurs, blame is avoided, risk managed and new ideas developed, tested and evaluated.

To successfully complete the transition from being a final year pre-reg nursing student to becoming a qualified staff nurse, students need to understand and practise the responsibilities and roles of the registered nurse. Consequently, they need a textbook which goes further than simply outlining the theory of leadership and management and teamwork and gives more than just 'tips' for being in charge. Nursing: transition to professional practice has been developed as a one-stop-shop for the principles of professional practice and the skills of the qualified nurse. Taking a logical approach, the authors introduce the role of the qualified nurse before explaining what it means to be in charge, how to deliver good care, how to make legal and ethical decisions, and the best ways to work with and teach other staff. Theory is applied to clinical work so readers can easily see the rationale behind daily decisions. Useful for the entire final year, the content is mapped against the transitional module and extremely useful for final year placements as well as providing tips on getting a job and continuing professional development. Written in an easy to read, student friendly manner the authors have brought together trustworthy and reliable advice in a way that is easy to dip into any time you need it- from writing an assignment, devising a nursing plan, documenting your placement learning outcomes, or finding advice on job applications. This book explores teachers' understanding of the personal and professional experiences that have informed their language teaching. The intent of the hardback edition is to bring into our professional conversations teachers' “ways of knowing” - that is, teachers' understanding of the experiences that have informed their language teaching. By making teachers' ways of knowing public, open to review, and accessible to others in this profession, this text hopes to validate, in ways afforded to other forms of scholarly work, teachers' own understanding of the activity of language teaching.

The field of second/foreign language teacher education is calling out for a coherent and comprehensive framework for teacher preparation in these times of accelerating economic, cultural, and educational globalization. Responding to this call, this book introduces a state-of-the-art model for developing prospective and practicing teachers into strategic thinkers, exploratory researchers, and transformative teachers. The model includes five modules: Knowing, Analyzing, Recognizing, Doing, and Seeing (KARDS). Its goal is to help teachers understand: how to build a viable professional, personal and procedural knowledge-base, how to analyze learner needs, motivation and autonomy, how to recognize their own identities, beliefs and values, how to do teaching, theorizing and dialogizing, and how to see their own teaching acts from learner, teacher, and observer perspectives. Providing a scaffold for building a holistic understanding of what happens in the language classroom, this model eventually enables teachers to theorize what they practice and practice what they theorize. With its strong scholarly foundation and its supporting reflective tasks and exploratory projects, this book is immensely useful for students, practicing teachers, teacher educators, and educational researchers who are interested in exploring the complexity of language teacher education.
