Why this book now? Children sit too much. They sit in silence, hunched over a cell phone, iPad, Kindle, or computer. Their fingers are the only body part moving, and only in repetitive motions—for hours on end. Technology has contributed to children moving their bodies and using their voices less and less. Let’s Move! Let’s Talk! Let’s Go! is an antidote for these current trends and describes games supported by original poetry and illustrations. This book provides easy-to-follow guidelines for the caregiver and child. Who is qualified to be a leader of the games? Everyone! The game leader does not need to have any special training. The leader can be a teacher, parent, sibling, or babysitter. Where can the games be played? Everywhere! All the games can be played without any special space or equipment requirements. A living room, basement, recreation room, classroom, or backyard are all useable spaces for playing the games. Praise for Let’s MOVE! Let’s TALK! Let’s GO! “This is a welcome book to the children’s market. The integration between movement in body and voice to convey expression is wonderfully accessible. Many texts deal with speech and movement separately; here we are presented with the fullness of both. And, as we are more fragmented via computer technology, this book gives budding learners a chance for clear communication and action.” – Cheryl Clark, CMA, BMC®, RSME/T, Senior Faculty member at the Laban Institute of Movement Studies, NYC, and on the faculty at the College for Performing Arts at The New School. “This book is a terrific resource for dance teachers, classroom teachers, music teachers, and families. It is a creative and practical book that provides ideas, teacher prompts, imagery and rhymes to introduce young children to the building blocks of expressive dance and dance-making through the lens of Laban Movement Analysis. Early childhood is a pivotal time for brain and body development and this book is a wonderful addition to the field of dance in early childhood.” – Deborah Damast MA, Director and Clinical Associate Professor of Dance Education at NYU Steinhardt. “This book is a useful tool to any pediatric occupational therapy practice. The book captures ways to teach clinicians, parents, and caregivers how to inspire and grow a child’s human potential through the connection to their bodies and emotions. The book’s poetry, games and fundamental use of breath are creative and playful additions to an occupational therapist’s sensory integration toolkit.” – Carol Battistone, M.A., OTR/L, 29 years in private practice, NYC.

" . . . carefully researched and clearly written . . . Goodwin makes a major step in redefining the enterprise of studying language use in context and across contexts." —American Ethnologist "I recommend the book highly." —John Haviland, American Anthropologist "Goodwin's thoughtful interpretation of these examples [of children's conversation] is replete with wise insights, challenging critical darts, and well-referenced links to a wide literature." —Child Development Abstracts & Bibliography "Intellectual breadth shines through this book." —Barrie Thorne "By combining Goffman's approach to ethnography with in-depth conversational analysis, Goodwin provides important and novel insights into the interactive processes through which culture is created and maintained. The results should be of interest to any social scientist." —John J. Gumperz " . . . required reading for linguists, anthropologists, sociologists, and educators." —Language and Acquisition "This book is clearly a significant addition to the study of the range and power of children's voices at play . . . " —Harvard Educational Review "He-Said-She-Said provides fascinating insight into the importance of social context in the organization of gender." —Signs "A rare and wonderful combination of ethnography and conversational analysis. Goodwin gives both a sensitive account of African American adolescent street talk and a careful approach to the study of language in use." —Ray McDermott "Marjorie Harness Goodwin's study of children's talk provides the best and most comprehensive analysis of gender differences in interaction, situated in the broader context of children's social organization. She didn't set up experiments; she didn't just take field notes. She hung around with the children in her neighborhood until they trusted her, then tape-recorded their natural conversations as they played together. This is Goodwin's long-awaited compilation of years of painstaking analysis of the transcripts of those tapes. It is not only one of the best sources, if not the best source, for anyone interested in how boys and girls use language in their daily lives—indeed, to constitute their daily lives; it is also a model ethnographic study of language in its natural setting." —Deborah Tannen, author of You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation This groundbreaking study describes in detail the complexities of children's communication. By integrating the analysis of conversation with ethnography, Marjorie Harness Goodwin systematically and empirically reveals how a group of urban black children constitute their social world through talk.

A slow and steady pace is what I keep repeating in my head as I follow my latest prey. She has no idea that I’m trailing her. It’s two o’clock in the morning and she walks in the dark having a conversation as if the next second doesn’t matter. If my prey were paying more attention to her safety then she wouldn’t be my next victim. I pull my black hoodie down more to conceal my face. Being dressed in all black allows me to blend into the background. My prey carries on her conversation as she turns down a dark alley. I push my body flush against the wall to look around the corner. The alleyway is long, and it’s surrounded by darkness. This is it I say to myself. I begin to move quickly as I pull out my syringe. In no time I’ve descended on my prey. She turns around but it’s too late. I jab the needle in her neck. Before she can put up a fight she falls limp in my arms. I pull her unconscious body behind large a dumpster. Her body remains there until I go to get my vehicle to transport her in. I don’t worry about anybody finding her because I’m not far from my car and whoever is out here at this time of night is only out here for their own misdeeds.
