Ao acreditar na importância de se explorar as potencialidades de textos pertencentes ao universo do cordel atreladas às práticas sociais de letramento como meio de ofertar ao educando uma aprendizagem significativa, a obra Letramento literário e cordel: um novo olhar para o ensino de Literatura traça um possível caminho para o desenvolvimento do leitor literário. De acordo com o próprio autor, "Talvez não exista forma literária mais genuinamente brasileira do que o cordel, fator que pode favorecer sua recepção por parte do aluno-leitor". O estudo conversa com as contribuições teóricas de diversos pesquisadores consagrados, tais como Regina Zilberman (1991/2003), Marisa Lajolo (1985/1994) e Maria Helena Martins (1994) – sobre leitura e formação do leitor; Paulo Freire (1975/1987), Ângela Kleiman (1995/1996) e Magda Soares (2004/2006) – sobre letramento; Rildo Cosson (2014) e Mirian Zappone (2008) – sobre letramento literário; Mark Curran (2009/2011), Ana Cristina Marinho e Hélder Pinheiro (2012) – sobre literatura de cordel e ensino. Este livro é um exemplo de como simples ideias, quando bem planejadas e executadas, podem mudar os rumos da educação literária no país.
