Excerpt from Letter Word and Mind Blindness OF the five chapters composing this little book, the last four were papers read before the Glasgow medico-chirurgical Society, and have been already published in the columns of the Lancet. These articles, embracing the results of extensive reading, as well as my own studies and observa tions, give a fairly comprehensive View of a subject, which has not received much attention in English medical litera ture. I have thought that the publication of these papers in book form would make them more accessible to those interested in the subject. For several reasons, it has been thought advisable to publish the papers in much the same form as they originally appeared in the columns of the Lancet, and therefore a certain amount of repetition, nu avoidable in the circumstances, will be found in each. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ...and therefore seeing the letters and words distinctly, an individual is no longer able to interpret written or printed language. With a clear understanding of this definition there is nothing misleading about the term, which is a most convenient one for describing a group of cases, which, however, includes several different forms. All the varieties have this point in common, that the inability to interpret written and printed language is not dependent upon any ocular defect, but upon disorder of the cerebral visual centres. The case just recorded presents many striking points of difference from the case recorded by me in the preceding chapter. Both, however, belong to the group which embraces disorders of the cerebral visual centres, and hence the present case has been described as a peculiar form or varietv of word-blindness. Complete word-blindness involving absolute inability to interpret written or printed language (alexia) is due, as was pointed out in the preceding chapter, either to a lesion in the visual memory centre, which occupies the left supra-marginal and angular gyri, or to a lesion which divides completely the fibres connecting this centre with the visual perceptive centres occupying both occipital lobes chiefly in the neighbourhood of the cuneus and calcarine fissure. But if the visual memory centre be itself intact and the conductivity of the connecting fibres be only partially impaired there may not be absolute inability to read (alexia), but there may be very great difficulty in interpreting written or printed symbols (dyslexia). The case under consideration seems to belong to the latter class. This peculiar difficulty in reading, at once struck me as being precisely similar to that met with by Professor Berlin of...

Philosophers of science work not only with the methods of the sciences but with their contents as well. Substantive issues concerning the relation between mind and matter, between the material basis and the functions of cognition, have been central within the entire history of philosophy. We recall such philosophers as Aristotle, Descartes, the early Kant, Ernst Mach, and the early William James as directly inquiring of the organs and structures of thinking. Science and its philosophical self-criticism are especially and deeply united in the effort to understand the biological brain and human behavior, and so it requires no apology to include this collection of clinical studies among Boston Studies in the Philosophy of Science. The work of Dr. Norman Geschwind, well represented in this selection, explores the relation between structure and function, between the anatomy of the brain and the 'higher' behavior of men and women. As a clinical neurologist, Geschwind was led to these studies particularly by his in terest in those pathologies which have to do with human perception and language. His research into the anatomical substrates of specific dis orders-and strikingly the aphasias -present a fascinating and provocative examination of fundamental questions which will concern not neurologists alone but also psychologists, physicians, linguists, speech pathologists, educators, anthropologists, historians of medicine, and philosophers, among others, namely all those interested in the characteristic modes of human activity, in speech, in perception, and in the learning process generally.

Dyslexia written by Philip Kirby and has been published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-15 with History categories.

In 1896 the British physician William Pringle Morgan published an account of “Percy,” a “bright and intelligent boy, quick at games, and in no way inferior to others of his age.” Yet, in spite of his intelligence, Percy had great difficulty learning to read. Percy was one of the first children to be described as having word-blindness, better known today as dyslexia. In this first comprehensive history of dyslexia Philip Kirby and Margaret Snowling chart a journey that begins with Victorian medicine and continues to dyslexia’s current status as the most globally recognized specific learning difficulty. In an engaging narrative style, Kirby and Snowling tell the story of dyslexia, examining its origins and revealing the many scientists, teachers, and campaigners who put it on the map. Through this history they explain current debates over the diagnosis of dyslexia and its impact on learning. For those who have lived experience of dyslexia, professionals who have supported them, and scholars of social history, education, psychology, and childhood studies, Dyslexia reflects on the place of literacy in society – whom it has benefited, and whom it has left behind.

Minimal Brain Dysfunction written by Paul L. Nichols and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-08-18 with Psychology categories.

The concept of Minimal Brain Dysfunction (a previous term for ADHD) has had a tumultuous, and some would say, checkered history. Originally published in 1981, this title was one of a series of volumes dealing with specific developmental problems in children whose mothers registered for prenatal care in the Collaborative Perinatal Project (NCPP) of the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke (NINCDS). In this volume, relationships between symptoms of minimal brain dysfunction and more than 300 prenatal and postnatal variables are examined in a cohort of nearly 30,000 7-year-old children. Despite greater understanding more recently, diagnosis and treatment continue to cause controversy. This is an early investigation into the concept of MBD and its causes, today it can be read in its historical context.
