Mi concentro sulle donne che abbiano partecipato al fascismo e provo di trovare una risposta perché hanno appoggiato il sistema. La massima importanza viene dato al periodo interbellico. Per comprendere, come e perché le donne abbiano appoggiato il sistema, deve prima essere analizzato il ruolo che lo Stato attribuiva alle donne. Che compito imponeva alle donne e come si comportava nei confronti di loro? Poi esamino come quasi tutte le attività delle donne venivano controllate e influenzate dallo Stato. Alla fine si può provare ad indagare le ragioni ed i motivi delle donne per sostenere il fascismo. In generale, si deve analizzare questo tema sullo sfondo, che il fascismo non era rigido come il nazifascismo in Germania, non praticava un controllo totalizzante sulle istituzioni e sulla popolazione italiana. Però era una dittatura con conseguenze grave. Soprattutto sul campo della politica nei confronti delle donne agiva in modo discriminatorio. Qui mi limito sul soggetto delle donne e provo ad analizzare come hanno maneggiato la situazione e come il regime riuscì ad ottenere il loro sostegno.

La storia dell’emancipazione femminile narrata nel romanzo svolge anche un’altra grande funzione della letteratura, quella legata alla fantasia: il riscatto. Adele, la protagonista, e la maggiore delle prozie del giovane scrittore, era infatti malata di epilessia, e fu condannata a una vita di reclusione e solitudine. Secondo i documenti di famiglia, pare che ci fosse anche lei fra le Libere donne di Magliano di Mario Tobino: Stefano Ceccanti ha voluto immaginare una sorte diversa per lei, nel tentativo di averle reso la giustizia che al tempo le fu negata.
