Letters have long been an outlet for political expression, whether they articulate the personal politics of the daily routine or the political views of individuals who witness or participate in dramatic events. In addition, letters can be unusually revealing records of the relations between men and women. Though letters have frequently been studied as a privileged space for literary, social, and cultural expression, the three-dimensional relationship of politics, gender, and letters has not been the focus of an entire volume. The nineteen essays in this collection examine how the gendered nature of political literacy is revealed over a 250-year period through letter writing, whether the writer is famous or unknown, the wife of a prominent politician or activist, a political prisoner or political militant. Ranging wide in terms of subject matter and geography, the contributors examine correspondence that ponders familial concerns, as well as letters providing political commentary on the effects of war or revolution on everyday life. Among the impressive group of international scholars are Jim Allen, Clare Brant, Edith Gelles, Jane Rendall, and Siân Reynolds.

Few artists have exerted as much influence on modern art as Paul Cézanne. Picasso, Braque, and Matisse all acknowledged a profound debt to his painting, and many historians regard him as the father of modernism. This new biography reexamines Cézanne’s life and art, discussing the key events and people who shaped his work and placing his oeuvre in the context of nineteenth and early twentieth-century art and culture. Jon Kear begins with Cézanne’s formative years in Provence, highlighting the deep and abiding impressions the landscapes of the region would have on his paintings. He follows him through his turbulent years as a young artist in Paris, where he would create the larger-than-life artistic persona—through a rugged painting style detailing explicit subjects—that would become a lasting mythology for him throughout all of his phases. He looks closely at Cézanne’s relationships with Edouard Manet—whom he both emulated and critiqued—and the writer Émile Zola, as well as his close collaboration with Camille Pissarro. Above all, he tells the story of his life as a part of the pivotal shift toward the twentieth century, illuminating how much his work and ideas helped to usher it in.

1943, Germany. Max, a soldier bound to a regime he cannot escape, harbors a secret that could destroy him: a forbidden love forged in stolen moments with Sam, a soul who taught him tenderness in a world of brutality. But when Sam vanishes into the suffocating darkness of a concentration camp—murdered by Max’s own brother—their fragile hope is crushed. Max survives the war carrying only a bloodstained sketchbook, a wound of guilt, and a truth too explosive to confess. 1950s America. Reborn as an immigrant in New York, Max marries a gentle woman who knows nothing of the shadows he harbors. Their life is a fragile facade—until a ghost from his past surfaces. A cryptic journal surfaces, implicating Max in Sam’s betrayal. Whispers follow him: Who sold Sam to the guards? What did Max sacrifice to survive? And why does his brother’s face now haunt the streets of his new homeland? As Max’s past and present collide, he must confront the moral chasm between loyalty and survival. Was his love a beacon of defiance… or a death sentence? And when a stranger arrives with evidence that could shatter his fragile peace, Max faces an impossible choice: expose the rot festering beneath his new life, or let the world—and the boy he loved—remain buried in ash. Falling for the Light is a taut, searing exploration of love’s resilience in the face of annihilation. Through fractured timelines and suffocating suspense, Sounak Ghosal masterfully unravels a story where every truth is a weapon, every memory a battleground. Can love survive betrayal? Or does it, like light, eventually fade—leaving only the darkness we carry? A haunting tale of secrets, survival, and the shadows we call redemption.
