Letters and Social Aims, published in 1875, contains essays originally published early in the 1840s as well as those that were the product of a collaborative effort among Emerson, his daughter Ellen Tucker Emerson, his son Edward Waldo Emerson, and his literary executor James Eliot Cabot. The volume takes up the topics of Poetry and Imagination, Social Aims, Eloquence, Resources, The Comic, Quotation and Originality, Progress of Culture, Persian Poetry, Inspiration, Greatness, and, appropriately for Emerson's last published book, Immortality. The historical introduction demonstrates for the first time the decline in Emerson's creative powers after 1865; the strain caused by the preparation of a poetry anthology and delivery of lectures at Harvard during this time; the devastating effect of a house fire in 1872; and how the Emerson children and Cabot worked together to enable Emerson to complete the book. The textual introduction traces this collaborative process in detail and also provides new information about the genesis of the volume as a response to a proposed unauthorized British edition of Emerson's works. Join Huck and Jim as they journey down the Mississippi in this beloved companion to "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer "and a standalone classic in its own right, with a fresh new cover and interior illustrations. "You don't know about me without you have read a book by the name of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"; but that ain't no matter," declares Huck at the start of one of the greatest books in American literature. Filled with all the humor, suspense, and sheer excitement of its predecessor, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn"--a nostalgic portrayal of a world Mark Twain knew intimately--tells the moving story of a boy who must make his own way in an often cruel society that counts it a sin to help a runaway slave. This edition includes a modern cover and new illustrations from Iacopo Bruno. This new look coincides with a new edition of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer "and the publication of "The Absolutely Truthful Adventures of Becky Thatcher."

Excerpt from British Letters, Illustrative of Character and Social Life The aim Of this work is to present certain phases of life and Character as described and exemplified by British letter-writers. While the search for materials has not been exhaust tive, it has been reasonably thorough. The number Of writers quoted is not particularly large; and that fact is a matter of indifference; for the end in view has not been to crowd the pages with distinguished names, but to insure the essential fitness Of the selections - a fitness consisting in their special adaptation to the plan Of the series. The peculiar Charm Of letters - perhaps, also, their greatest value - is brought home to us when they are familiar, unstudied expressions Of thought and feeling; when they betray no sense Of a larger audience than the friends for whom alone they were written. The contents Of these volumes do not uniformly maintain so high an excellence, but they exhibit many striking examples Of it. Letters which are known to have been intended for publication. A tribute to a man whose life's work has centered on the study of authorship and who is a scholar and book collector of the first magnitude, The Professions of Authorship examines the business of writing, publishing, and selling books - or what George V. Higgins describes in this volume as a "perplexing, disorganized, chameleonic enterprise". Twenty-three authors, publishing professionals, and scholars who share Matthew J. Bruccoli's love and knowledge of books offer candid observations and opinions about the past, present, and future of publishing. In doing so, they unravel many of the mysteries surrounding this tradition-bound endeavor.

Excerpt from Letters and Letter Writing: As Means to the Study and Practice of English Composition This book has been prepared in the belief that there is a place for the emphasis of heretofore undeveloped possibilities in composition writing, and that contributions yet to be made to the teaching of English will consist of chapters on single topics thoroughly treated, rather than of books covering the whole subject and containing a re-statement of what has already been so well and so satisfactorily said. The specimen letters in Part I commend themselves by their own value; many of them have not before been given to the general public; some of them are old and very well known; all of them are precious. The annotated list of letters at the end of this part calls attention to many letters not given in the text. The work in Part II aims to show what practical use can be made of the letters in Part I, as models for composition through letter-writing, and to illustrate the adequacy of the epistolary forms for securing ease and fluency in written expression. It further aims to show that the average school situation through its studies, through the experiences of its student life, and through the larger social life surrounding it, is rich in genuine motives for letters.
