Shy middle grader Alf A. Bet (who wants to keep his middle name secret) accidentally learns the entire encyclopedia. He, three other children, and the school's pet hamster get thrown together against their wishes. They learn to work with each other and use their individual skills to solve a worsening life-or-death crisis. After a successful outcome, the town celebrates at a local amusement park. This quirky story playfully pokes fun at itself, the reader, students, teachers, principals, coaches, cooks, adults, animals, Grandpa, and even the English language. Clever, innovative use of footnotes, glossary definitions, em-dashes, ellipses, intentional misspellings, Roman Numerals, whimsical names, parenthetical asides, word play, and emoticons all help to build a reader-author bond. They also add to the laughs and have educational value. There is a little bit of early romance.Unique chapters contain: words that mostly start with the same letter; partial famous quotations that the reader may try to identify and complete; words using numbers 4 letters; a dream sequence containing all the words in numerous nursery rhymes; text printed in disappearing ink.The surprise ending is pleasant and thought-provoking.

Now presented with a son's thirty years of research to provide new context. In June 1970, Sam Melville pleaded guilty to a series of politically motivated bombings in New York City and was sentenced to thirteen to eighteen years in jail. His imprisonment took him to Attica, where he helped lead the massive rebellion of September 9, 1971—and where, four days later, he was shot to death by state police. During nearly two years in prison, Melville wrote letters to his friends, his attorneys, his former wife, and his young son. To read them is to eavesdrop on a man's soul. Determinedly honest and deeply moving, they reveal much about Sam and evoke the suffering of prisoners in America. Collected after his death, the letters were originally published with material by Jane Alpert, who was living with Sam when both were arrested on bombing charges, and John Cohen, a close friend who visited Sam in jail. Sam's letters begin with despair but end in hope and defiance. He became a leader of the prisoners' struggle for justice and humane treatment. At Attica he fought against and was a victim of the state's brutality. Those who knew Sam found him a man of extraordinary courage and determination, who rather than accede or submit to injustice and racism chose to fight against them.

In 1935 a young Englishman living on Corfu wrote enthusiastically to a middle-aged Brooklynite who had just published a succes de scandale in Paris: ... Tropic [of Cancer] turns the corner into a new life which has regained its bowels." Henry Miller, realizing that in Lawrence Durrell he had hooked his ideal reader, responded: "You're the first Britisher who's written me an intelligent letter about the book." Thus began a correspondence that ended only with Miller's death in 1980 - nearly 1,000,000 words later. The Durrell-Miller Letters, 1935-80 contains an extensive and representative selection of the total correspondence. Almost half of the present volume has never been published before, including some recently recovered "lost" letters; in addition, many passages expurgated from letters published in 1963 have been restored. Editor Ian S. MacNiven of the State University of New York, Maritime College, is quite right to regard the Durrell-Miller correspondence as a dual biography of the creative lives of two of this century'sgreat literary iconoclasts, a biography "At once as serious as Schopenhauer and as winning as wine." Duty Nobly Done written by Adam Holloway and has been published by Simon and Schuster this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-10-05 with History categories.

This is the extraordinary true story of 11 young Australian men from one extended family and their experiences in the great adventure that would change their lives — the Great War. Author Adam Holloway, a direct descendant, takes the reader into the lives of each of these men as they embark on a journey from which they are unlikely to return. These were young, confident men who revelled in the brash optimism of a young nation. They were desperate to prove themselves, eager to assert the justice of their cause and keen for a taste of the excitement and comradeship of battle. They were not expecting to be plunged into a lingering nightmare characterised by the stench of death and putrefaction, overwhelming fear and despair, and the gnawing uncertainty of survival. Holloway uses personal letters, diaries and family memories to deftly recreate the nail-biting tension as each man experiences his own baptism of fire amid the utter horror of the sights and sounds of battle. From the craggy cliffs of Gallipoli to the insatiable maw of the Western Front, these brothers and cousins step forward to take their turn in a procession of courage, each determined to do his duty and to look after his battalion brothers. This is a story that portrays the Great War on a personal level, describing in remarkable detail how it felt to fight in the worst conflict the world had known, a conflict that would change these young men and Australian society forever.
