Excerpt from A Treatise on the Lord's Supper: Designed as a Guide and Companion to the Holy Communion In these words of Hooker, is pointed out the true nature and use of a sacrament. The grace we Obtain by a right reception Of the Lord's Supper is the participation of Christ, and of life through him. The Apostle's words on this point are express - The cap of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ For we being many are one bread and one body, for we are all partakers of that one bread. The unworthy receiver forfeits the blessing, (1 Cor. Xi. Just as the unworthy conduct of many in Israel forfeited the blessing designed by that spiritual meat of which they all ate, and that spiritual drink Of which they all drank. But it was not the less, Spiritual meat and spiritual drink, conveying to true believers in types, Christ and his grace, and real par ticipation of spiritual blessings. Excerpt from A Discourse on the Nature, Design, and Institution, of the Holy Eucharist: Commonly Called the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper For a considerable time past, I had formed the design of offering for publication the various tracts of Dr. Adam Clarke. My reasons were briefly these: I perceived an uncommon eagerness in every person with whom I conversed respecting this very learned, and justly celebrated man, to he in possession of all which he had produced. This circumstance I saw would induce some one to take up his detached pieces, as they from time to time fell into their hands, and print them, probably, from the first editions, in a less perfect state than I had it in my power to do. Ever since I settled in this country, the Author, as a testimony of that continued friendship, which had subsisted for a number of years, had regularly transmitted to me the latest editions of all his publications; and I believe several of them were never in any ones hands hit my own. I therefore considered that a more complete collection was not likely to come from any other source. Being anxious, however, that the Author should, if necessary, make any alterations, and add any other pieces which he might have by him in manuscript, I apprised him, in the beginning of the last year, of my intention.
