In April of 1992 John L. Van der Heyden registered a trademark for courses, trainings and education at the Benelux Trade Registrar in The Hague with the name Instituto Cervantes and founded the Foundation Cervantes Benelux. Four years later, on the 31st of July he invited the Crown Princes of The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg and Spain to become the government of the foundation. The next day -- the first of August -- Van der Heyden went to England and lighted a candle at Canterbury Cathedral. From that time it became clear to him that Princess Diana was also interested in his project. How things developed from that time is explained in Letters to Diana, Princess of Wales. The story ends with the fatal kidnapping in Paris, exactly four weeks before Diana and Van der Heyden's proposed wedding day in The Netherlands.

The glittering letters of British socialite Lady Diana Cooper to her son John Julius Norwich, from pre-World War Two London to post-Liberation Paris ‘Please, darling monster, write as often as you can. It’s so sad waiting for letters that don’t come and are not even written. I love my darling boy. Don’t treat me so badly again or I’ll have your lights and liver when I get home.’ 19 November 1939 ‘I wish, I wish it was all over – Hitler defeated, the lights up again and the guns still.’ 2 October 1940 Lady Diana Cooper was the Edwardian It Girl who inspired novelists from Evelyn Waugh to Nancy Mitford. Born Lady Diana Manners, she was an aristocrat, society darling and an actress. Married to political star Duff Cooper, they were the golden couple at the heart of 20th century British upper-class life. This extraordinary collection of letters written by Diana to her only son, John Julius Norwich, takes us from the rumblings of war, through the Blitz to rural Sussex to post-Liberation Paris. Beyond all the glitz, Diana emerges in these letters as highly intelligent, funny and fiercely loyal: a woman who disliked extravagance and was often shy, who was happiest in the countryside and whose greatest love were her husband and son John, who would later become a leading historian and broadcaster. These illuminating letters document some of history’s most dramatic events, but they provide a vivid and touching portrait of the love between a mother and son, separated by war, oceans – and the constraints of the time they lived in. ‘Diana Cooper is as vivid in literature and social legend as she was in life. Her letters are frank, witty and humorous’ The Times

SYNOPSIS OF THE BOOK Confined to Balmoral Castle by old age, Queen Elizabeth II decides to write a private and unexpected letter to Lady Diana, the People's Princess, her former daughter-in-law whose tragic death twenty-five years before marked the history of the United Kingdom. The words flow like a flooding river, through memories, remorse and reflections on life, the monarchy and the weight of the crown. Elizabeth reveals for the first time her deepest emotions, inner struggles and the tension between her position as Queen and her identity as a woman, as a mother and as a grandmother. As she tries to find meaning in the years gone by and muses about the time she has left, she explores her own personal relationship with Diana, the controversial figure who changed the British royal family forever. With intimacy and honesty, the Queen confronts her public image, society's expectations and her own conscience, revealing a side of herself the world had never seen before. 'Dear Diana' is a touching reflection on the end of life, the choices and the relationships that define our existence, a tale that reveals the heart and soul of a woman beyond the crown. Long before her tragic death, Diana, Princess of Wales was a beloved modern icon, relatable to the general public in a way that transcended the barrier between royal and commoner. As a member of the royal family in an age of mass media, her fairy-tale wedding to, and painful divorce from, Prince Charles was played out on the world stage. Later, her humanitarian work for the Red Cross, her campaigns against landmines, and her work with the sick, especially AIDS victims, added a compassionate element to the royal family in the eyes of the world—and the world, ten years later, still hasn't gotten enough of Lady Di. This objective, accessible volume explores Diana's fascinating life, including her aristocratic upbringing, her whirlwind engagement to Prince Charles, her rocky marriage, her post-divorce status as global humanitarian icon, the media's frenzied treatment of her death, and her charitable legacy, including her sons' coming-of-age and their attempts to honor her memory.

While the letters exchanged between the man who was to become King Edward VIII/ Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson/ Duchess of Windsor have been preserved and published, it had long been thought that many of the Prince of Wales' letters to his earlier mistress, Mrs Freda Dudley Ward, had been destroyed by her some time before her death. But in November 1996, editor Rupert Godfrey came across by chance while holidaying abroad: 262 letters, dating from 1918 to 1921, over 100 photographs and assorted cards and memorabilia. They covered the last year of the First World War and the Prince's official tours of Canada, New Zealand and Australia, when he was in his early twenties. Revealing and touching, the letters will alter our perception of the man born to give up the throne for the woman he later came to love.
