In this new volume of letters, readers are invited to meet Olivia Louise Langdon Clemens on her own terms, in her own voice—as complementary partner to her world-famous spouse, Mark Twain, and as enduring friend, mother to four children, world traveler, and much more. The frail woman often portrayed by scholars, biographers, and Twain himself is largely absent in these letters. Instead, Olivia (who Twain affectionately referred to as “Gravity” in their early correspondence) emerges as a resilient and energetic nineteenth-century woman, her family’s source and center of stability, and a well of private and public grace in an ever-changing landscape. Mark Twain’s biography recounted in Olivia’s letters offers new insights, and her captivating voice is certain to engage and enlighten readers.

Emily Pomona Edson Briggs (1830-1910) was an American journalist and one of the first women to acquire a national reputation in the field. When her husband John R Briggs, whom she had married around 1854, was appointed as assistant clerk of the US House of Representatives in 1861, Emily discovered a talent for observing and commenting on the political scene. Her letter to the Washington Chronicle defending the employment of women in government caught the attention of the paper's owner and she was hired to write a daily column. She published her pieces under the pseudonym Olivia, contributing to the Chronicle and its sister paper the Philadelphia Press for over 20 years. Her comments on public affairs were always incisive and whilst paying some attention to society and fashion, her column was quite unusual for a female journalist of the day. During the Lincoln administration she became the first woman to report directly from the White House, becoming personally close to the Lincoln family, and later she was among the first to be admitted to the congressional press gallery. She was elected first president of the Women's National Press Association upon its organization in 1882 and in later years became a noted Washington hostess. This collection of her columns was first published in 1906.

This collection of never-before-published correspondence between Pound and Agresti, begun in 1937 and continuing through Pound's incarceration at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C.--where he was found mentally unfit to stand trial for treason--reveals the depth and breadth of his many virulent views against the politics of the Second World War. Excerpt from The Olivia Letters: Being Some History of Washington City for Forty Years as Told by the Letters of a Newspaper Correspondent The time has come when our wealthy citizens need not to go abroad to see the finest specimen of architecture of the kind in the world. Visitors to the shrine of St. Paul and St. Peter return westward and award the palm of superiority to the dome of the nation's Capitol. Towering 300 feet from the base to the summit, its superb porportions, unsurpassed in the world of art, at once attract the attention of all beholders, and, as the king of the landscape, it reigns supreme. But to see it in all its regal beauty it should be aflame of a night, with its innumerable gas jets; then it becomes in every sense of the word, a "mountain of light," and shares the honors of the evening with the "Pleiades," "Orion," and the "Milky Way." The Pharaoh who built the mighty pyramid of Egypt simply constructed his own monument, and in the same way the architect of the dome, a citizen of good old Philadelphia, has woven his name into a fragment of the web of Time. Thomas U. Walter - do you know him? - the man who held this mighty tower in his brain, in all its perfection, long, long before it ever saw the light of day. When you and I, dear reader, are not so much as a pinch of dust - when the names of Washington and Lincoln are as remote as the sages who lived before Christ - the great architects of the world will live, whether they sprung from the tawny mud of the Nile, the soil of classic Greece, or the rich vegetable mould of the western hemisphere. Olivia Gardner, a northern California teenager, was severely taunted and cyber-bullied by her classmates for more than two years. News of her bullying spread, eventually reaching two teenage girls from a neighboring town, sisters Emily and Sarah Buder. The girls were so moved by Olivia's story that they initiated a letter-writing campaign to help lift her spirits. It was a tender gesture of solidarity that set off an overwhelming chain reaction of support, encouragement, and love. In Letters to a Bullied Girl, Olivia and the Buder sisters share an inspiring selection of messages that arrived from across America—the personal, often painful remembrances of former targets, remorseful bullies, and sympathetic bystanders. Letters to a Bullied Girl examines our national bullying epidemic from a variety of angles and perspectives, and includes practical guidance from bullying expert Barbara Coloroso, author of The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander. Though addressed to Olivia, the letters speak to all young people who have been bullied, offer advice and hope to those who suffer, and provide a wake-up call to all who have ever been involved in bullying.
