Dit 12e deel van de reeks "Hemsterhusiana" omvat allerlei toelichting op de correspondentie van de Nederlandse filosoof Frans / François Hemsterhuis met diverse correspondenten. De meeste brieven schreef hij aan prinses Gallitzin en deze zijn eerder in deze reeks verschenen onder de titel "Ma route chère Diotime" (10 delen). Haar antwoordbrieven en de brieven van en aan andere correspondenten eveneens uitgegeven (in 4 resp. 2 delen). Op deze complete correspondentie biedt dit deel een toelichting over allerlei personen rondom Hemsterhuis, zoals samengevat in de ondertitel: vrienden, verwanten en passanten. Daarmee dient dit deel als een register en als een bescheiden commentaar op de brieven. Voorts worden er "kringen" beschreven waaronder kan worden verstaan de werkkring van Hemsterhuis, met de namen van de leden van de Raad van State, en de personen aan wie hij exemplaren van zijn eigen geschriften toezond. Het geheel dient, zo men wil, als een personenregister op Hemsterhuis' leven.

This volume of essays is meant as a tribute to Alistair Crombie by some of those who have studied with him. The occasion of its publication is his seven tieth birthday - 4 November 1985. Its contents are a reflection - or so it is hoped - of his own interests, and they indicate at the same time his influence on subjects he has pursued for some forty years. Born in Brisbane, Australia, Alistair Cameron Crombie took a first degree in zoology at the University of Melbourne in 1938, after which he moved to Je sus College, Cambridge. There he took a doctorate in the same subject (with a dissertation on population dynamics - foreshadowing a later interest in the history of Darwinism) in 1942. By this time he had taken up a research position with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries in the Cambridge Zoological La boratory, a position he left in 1946, when he moved to a lectureship in the his tory and philosophy of science at University College, London. H. G. Andrewa ka and L. C. Birch, in a survey of the history of insect ecology (R. F. Smith, et al. , History of Entomology, 1973), recognise the importance of the works of Crombie (with which they couple the earlier work of Gause) as the principal sti mulus for the great interest taken in interspecific competition in the mid 194Os.

The edition is supported by an Introduction setting it in the context of the general development of political theory in the Christian West. Dr R.W. Dyson was educated at the University of Durham, where he taught the History of Political Thought in the School of Government and International Affairs until his retirement in 2007.

Using the critical approach of the New Historicism and the sociological insights of Ernst Troeltsch, this study addresses the complicated issue of how the German Romantic poet, Friedrich Hölderlin, shifts religious vocabulary to the aesthetic realm, by examining his relationship to pietist groups in his native Württemberg. The study is divided into three sections: 1) a literature review and methodological statement; 2) overview of the spectrum of positions represented within Württemberg pietism, and a discussion of three pietists known to have had contact with Hölderlin in his youth and as a student; 3) analysis of a representative selection of Hölderlin's works - including his early poems, Hyperion, his theoretical writings on aesthetics, and a number of his late hymns - in light of their relation to Württemberg pietism.
