En general, poco se sabe de los escasos novelistas griegos antiguos de los que hoy se tiene conocimiento, y Aquiles Tacio no es una excepción. El autor de Leucipa y Clitofonte vivió en la segunda mitad del siglo II d. C. y posiblemente era originario de Alejandría. Un marco bucólico para un amor juvenil: Dafnis y Cloe juegan a ser amantes sin llegar a la conclusión de su anhelo hasta después de una feliz boda, en un marco pastoril donde suena la flauta y las estaciones colorean el ameno paisaje. Longo, buen conocedor de Teócrito y la tradición poética anterior, relata la historia con un estilo singular, sencillo y afectado a la vez. Esta novela ha sido muy apreciada, sobre todo en los siglos XVIII y XIX. Goethe comparaba a Longo con Virgilio y decía leerlo cada año; varios pintores y músicos se han inspirado en esta historia para sus composiciones. Leucipa y Clitofonte, de Aquiles Tacio, de finales del siglo II, es una obra escrita cuando la novelística griega ha consolidado ya sus rasgos genéricos, puesto que usa sus convenciones con gran soltura, e incluso se permite algunos tratamientos irónicos. El argumento se torna más complejo y acentúa la tendencia folletinesca de la novela griega, los protagonistas se aburguesan, las digresiones (descripciones e historietas intercaladas) se multiplican. El volumen se cierra con los fragmentos conservados de otra novela, las Babilónicas de Jámblico, que va acompañada de un resumen argumental posterior.

This volume gathers chapters related to the condition of women in the ancient novel.
