Collocations as a fascinating linguistic phenomenon reflect the linguistic, stylistic and cultural features of any languages. The importance of collocations, the syntactic and semantic patterns they follow in a language and in the translation of literary texts, the way(s)in which they are translated, would be the matter of investigation in this book. This book attempts to shed light on the nature of the differences in collocational patterning of Persian and English languages.Based on a careful content analysis of eleven Persian texts(nontranslated)and their translations(translated texts)from different genres and periods of time which were translated by the native bilingual English translators or official English authorities, the authors found that there was a significant difference between Persian and English collocational patterns. In Persian language, noun+adjective pattern is the most frequent one while in English texts, adjective+ noun and noun+noun are highly frequent patterns.Shifts in translation of Persian to English collocational patterns during the time is an interesting finding of this book.It shows that the more Persian language is known, the more accurate translation is a

An analysis of verb collocation patterns in English and Persian compares the system of verb collocations in English and Persian, predicts and evaluates the difficulties caused by the minimal differences in verb collocations. According to contrastive lexical approach to verb collocation, English has more choices in the construction of verbs than Persian does. English simple verbs outnumber those of Persian. Unlike Persian, English has a broad range of verb types. Above all, English uses verb collocations to paraphrase a verb; change register; elaborate on nouns; switch from the transitive restriction of a simple verb to an intransitive mode; and produce certain pragmatic effects to exercise formality and conciseness whereas in Persian verbs are generally governed by meaning. The use of verb collocations in English seems to be a matter of strategy to give variety to communication, whereas the use of verb collocations in Persian is a matter of necessity. Besides the classification of verbs, the book concluded that when EFL learners receive intervention on verb collocation, and are informed of the grammatical properties of verbs, they can feel at home with English collocations.

Semantic Spaces Of Persian Light Verbs written by Neiloufar Family and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-11-27 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

In Semantic Spaces of Persian Light Verbs, Neiloufar Family exposes the semantic organization of light verb constructions in Persian. By clustering constructions based on semantic properties, she provides an insightful and more global view of a system that has been notoriously difficult to classify. Using diagrams as visual aids, Neiloufar Family takes a novel, bottom-up approach to analysing the light verb system, starting from small sets of constructions and mapping out consistent patterns. Her analysis leads to a deeper understanding of the structure of semantic spaces within the verbal system in Persian, and other languages that use light verbs. This research provides a blueprint for understanding existing verbal constructions and productively creating new ones.

In a field like L2 vocabulary teaching and learning where interest and research studies are burgeoning, this book offers a useful collection of papers that contains new ways of investigating vocabulary development, techniques for vocabulary teaching such as the Focus on Form hypothesis, word associations, and the use of concordance data. In addition, it tackles recent areas of analysis such as the treatment of vocabulary in teaching materials—an area of almost complete neglect in the literature. The book is divided into three parts. Part one provides the overview and deals with the development of a model for vocabulary teaching and learning. Part two focuses on empirical studies on lexical processing in English and Spanish. Part three centers on materials design for vocabulary teaching and learning. The advances made in this book will certainly be of interest to researchers, teachers, and graduate students working on this very active field of inquiry.

Formulaic Sequences written by Norbert Schmitt and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Formulaic sequences (FS) are now recognized as an essential element of language use. However, research on FS has generally been limited to a focus on description, or on the place of FS in L1 acquisition. This volume opens new directions in FS research, concentrating on how FS are acquired and processed by the mind, both in the L1 and L2. The ten original studies in the volume illustrate the L2 acquisition of FS, the relationship between L1 and L2 FS, the relationship between corpus recurrence of FS and their psycholinguistic reality, the processes involved in reading FS, and pedagogical issues in teaching FS. The studies use a wide range of methodologies, many of them innovative, and thus the volume serves as a model for future research in the area. The volume begins with three survey chapters offering a background on the characteristics and measurement of FS.
