El estudio de los kichwa-otavalo representa un gran desafío. Exige desenmascarar estereotipos y lugares comunes que se han construido alrededor de los grupos indígenas, en general. y de los kichwa-otavalo, en particular. Mostrar la riqueza, diversidad y complejidad de la migración de este grupo étnico, junto con las transformaciones sociales que han sufrido estas comunidades como producto de su movilidad histórica, es uno de los objetivos de este trabajo. Además de una investigación detallada del proceso migratorio, se analizan sus efectos dentro de las comunidades en el ámbito social, cultural y político. La dinámica de un mundo global ha dado lugar a nuevas desigualdades. Con el fin de mostrar los cambios y tensiones que se producen a partir de la migración, se ha escogido la fiesta del Pawkar Raymi, donde estas desigualdades fraguadas históricamente se expresan, reafirman y contestan. Finalmente este estudio pretende demostrar que las comunidades se construyen en la interacción con diversos grupos y el intercambio con otras culturas. Complejizar y problematizar la migración kichwa otavalo enriquece la teoría sobre la globalización y su relación con el ámbito local.

This book examines ritual practices and public festivals in the Otavalo and Cotacachi areas of northern Andean Ecuador's Imbabura province.
