Cold War Liberation written by Natalia Telepneva and has been published by UNC Press Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-04-04 with History categories.

Cold War Liberation examines the African revolutionaries who led armed struggles in three Portuguese colonies—Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau—and their liaisons in Moscow, Prague, East Berlin, and Sofia. By reconstructing a multidimensional story that focuses on both the impact of the Soviet Union on the end of the Portuguese Empire in Africa and the effect of the anticolonial struggles on the Soviet Union, Natalia Telepneva bridges the gap between the narratives of individual anticolonial movements and those of superpower rivalry in sub-Saharan Africa during the Cold War. Drawing on newly available archival sources from Russia and Eastern Europe and interviews with key participants, Telepneva emphasizes the agency of African liberation leaders who enlisted the superpower into their movements via their relationships with middle-ranking members of the Soviet bureaucracy. These administrators had considerable scope to shape policies in the Portuguese colonies which in turn increased the Soviet commitment to decolonization in the wider region. An innovative reinterpretation of the relationships forged between African revolutionaries and the countries of the Warsaw Pact, Cold War Liberation is a bold addition to debates about policy-making in the Global South during the Cold War. "In his characteristically engaging conversational style, combining intimate first-hand knowledge and lightly-worn scholarship with strong opinions, John Saul takes the reader vividly into the heart of the Canadian and American movements that supported the anti-apartheid and liberation struggles in southern Africa." -- Colin Leys, co-editor, The Socialist Register "Solidarity is the soul of the workers' movement. This is a book about one of history's greatest international solidarity movements: the anti-apartheid movement and that in support of the southern African liberation struggles more generally. It provides an inspiring and incisive account that raises sharply the question of what could have been had our revolution not lost its way by succumbing to neo-liberalism's false hopes and dead-end solutions." -- Trevor Ngwane, veteran South African activist and writer "John Saul offers far more than a comprehensive analysis of the historical development of Southern African solidarity movements in North America. He issues a call for an emancipatory politics and practice that locates battles for liberation in a larger context and in relationship to each other. He also challenges us to demystify the national liberation movements many of us worshiped in order to see not only their strengths and weaknesses, but in order to understand the forces that have ground many of them to a halt. What an outstanding piece of writing!" -- Bill Fletcher, Jr., former President of TransAfrica Forum; host of The Global African on Telesur-English.

The Political Theory Of Liberation Theology written by John R. Pottenger and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-09-14 with Political Science categories.

This is the first in-depth look at the political theoretical structure of liberation theology. Pottenger shows how liberation theologians, writing from the perspective of the poor and oppressed, denounce modernity and especially capitalism for having caused poverty and military dictatorships. He evaluates the liberation theologians' methodological approach to political theory and the crucial role of Marxism. He also analyzes liberation theologians' assessment of Latin American political economy and their moral arguments for political activism in response to these assessments. Pottenger addresses the general question of to what extent liberation theology has achieved its ultimate objective of a just society—of the convergence of traditional social values and modern political science.

Black Theology Usa And South Africa written by Dwight N. Hopkins and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-12-01 with Religion categories.

Black theology continually poses a challenge to Christian witness and faith. Through a critical analysis of leading religious thinkers, Dwight N. Hopkins explores the fundamental differences and similarities between black theology in the United States and black theology in South Africa and asks: What is the common denominator between the two? Part I examines the historical, political, cultural, and theological background of contemporary black theology in both countries. Hopkins delves into the distinctive situation of each country, focusing on civil rights, black power, and related political, cultural, and theological themes in the United States, and on civil disobedience, black consciousness, the unity of politics and culture, and political/cultural/theological themes in South Africa. Through interviews with leading black religious scholars, Part II explores these theologies in depth. Contrasting the cultural-theological trend with the political-theological trend in the USA, Hopkins explores the ideas of theologians Albert B. Cleage, James H. Cone, J. Deotis Roberts, William R. Jones, Gayraud S. Wilmore, Charles H. Long, Cecil W. Cone, and Vincent Harding. In Part III Hopkins examines the same two trends - cultural-theological and political-theological - in South Africa. Here the focus is on the impact of black consciousness and Soweto, and the works of Manas Buthelezi, Allan Boesak, Simon S. Maimela, Frank Chikane, Bonganjalo C. Goba, Itumeleng J. Mosala, Takatso A. Mofokeng, and Desmond M. Tutu. Part IV brings black theology USA and black theology South Africa into dialogue. Hopkins locates the common denominator between the tow theologies: that they both claim the Christian gospel as the gospel of liberation for black people struggling against racism and for a holistic humanity - physically and spiritually, politically and culturally. He concludes by looking toward future areas of development and collaboration, arguing that an effective black theology of liberation must integrate politics and culture, insuring that the two are equal and complementary, two tributaries within the same current.

Liberation Theology written by Phillip Berryman and has been published by Pantheon this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-02-20 with Religion categories.

Liberation theology has become an essential component of almost every major debate over Latin America today. It has changed the face of political life in Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Haiti; contributed to the rise of “people power” in the Philippines; even played a role in the growing discontent of debt-plagued Brazil. Now, using the plainspoken approach that made his Inside Central America the indispensable book on current affairs in the region, Phillip Berryman traces the origins, spread, and impact of liberation theology. He shows how its proponents have radically reinterpreted basic Biblical themes (such as the Creation and the Exodus) from the perspective of the poor and isenfranchised. By not asking “What must I believe?” but rather “What is to be done?” they make a direct connection between religious beliefs and political life.

Ethics And Liberation written by Charles L. Kammer and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-12-26 with Religion categories.

The introduction to the nature and purpose of Christian ethics presents an ethical theory consistent with the fundamental insights of the Christian tradition. 'Ethics and Liberation' outlines an ethic which provides guidelines for responsible stands on contemporary issues, be they personal or socio-political. Exploring both the strengths and weaknesses of traditional Christian ethics, Kammer proposes going beyond them to an ethic of theonomous responsibility, one based on the precepts of liberation theology. Stressing the socio-political dimension of ethics, Kammer follows the threads of Christian tradition that led to an emphasis on personal salvation and a neglect of social issues. Finally, he traces the path from Christian realism through liberation theology. 'Ethics and Liberation' concludes with a discussion of two serious test casesÓ in contemporary moral issues: the distribution of health care, and nuclear disarmament.
