Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada (Twenty Love Poems and A Song of Despair) es una de las más célebres obras del poeta chileno Pablo Neruda (1904-1973). Publicado en 1924, el poemario lanzó a su autor a la fama con apenas 19 años de edad, y es una de las obras literarias de mayor renombre del siglo XX en la lengua castellana. El libro pertenece a la época de juventud del poeta, ya que fue escrito y publicado cuando no contaba aún con veinte años. Su origen se suele explicar como una evolución consciente de su poética que trata de salirse de los moldes del modernismo que dominaban sus primeras composiciones y su primer libro, Crepusculario. La obra está compuesta por veinte poemas de temática amorosa, más un poema final titulado La canción desesperada. A excepción de este último, los poemas no tienen título. Aunque el poemario esté basado en experiencias amorosas reales del joven Neruda, es un libro de amor que no se dirige a una sola amante. El poeta ha mezclado en sus versos las características físicas de varias mujeres reales de su primera juventud para crear una imagen de la amada irreal que no corresponde a ninguna de ellas en concreto, sino que representa una idea puramente poética de su objeto amoroso.

These poems were written in prison, in the depth of night, by the poor light of a peculiar lamp, assembled from an old inkwell, a little alcohol that I smuggled from the sick bay and a wick plaited from the lace of an espadrille. Afterwards when eyes and keys were waking up, I would hide my words in a shoe and while walking in the prison yard, on a circular path that led nowhere, I would memorise the poems, giving them form and harmony...' The Spanish Communist poet Marcos Ana (1920-2016) was Spain's longest serving political prisoner. Captured by Italian troops at the end of the Civil War, he spent the next 23 years in Franco's prisons, often in solitary confinement. In prison he started writing poems, which were smuggled out and published as Poemas desde la cercel (1960). Ana was eventually released in 1961, following an international campaign led by Pablo Neruda, Rafael Alberti, Jean-Paul Sartre, Yves Montand, Pablo Picasso and Joan Baez. Che Guevara was carrying one of Ana's books when he was executed. Clear, musical, painful and compelling, Poems from Prison and Life is the first English translation of Ana's last book, published when he was 91, in order to 'open a path of fire and rebellion in the hearts and minds of the new generations, in whose furrows we have sown our history.'

Federico García Lorca (Fuentevaqueros, 5 de junio de 1898 - Víznar, 19 de agosto de 1936). Poeta y dramaturgo español. En 1915 comienza a estudiar Filosofía y Letras, así como Derecho, en la Universidad de Granada. Forma parte de El Rinconcillo, centro de reunión de los artistas granadinos donde conoce a Manuel de Falla. Entre 1916 y 1917 realiza una serie de viajes por España con sus compañeros de estudios, conociendo a Antonio Machado. En 1919 se traslada a Madrid y se instala en la Residencia de Estudiantes, coincidiendo con numerosos literatos e intelectuales.Junto a un grupo de intelectuales granadinos funda en 1928 la revista Gallo, de la que sólo salen 2 ejemplares. En 1929 viaja a Nueva York y a Cuba. Dos años después funda el grupo teatral universitario La Barraca, para acercar el teatro al pueblo, y en 1936 vuelve a Granada donde es detenido y fusilado por sus ideas liberales.Escribe tanto poesía como teatro, si bien en los últimos años se volcó más en este último, participando no sólo en su creación sino también en la escenificación y el montaje. En sus primeros libros de poesía se muestra más bien modernista, siguiendo la estela de Antonio Machado, Rubén Darío y Salvador Rueda. En una segunda etapa aúna el Modernismo con la Vanguardia, partiendo de una base tradicional.En cuanto a su labor teatral, Lorca emplea rasgos líricos, míticos y simbólicos, y recurre tanto a la canción popular como a la desmesura calderoniana o al teatro de títeres. En su teatro lo visual es tan importante como lo lingüístico, y predomina siempre el dramatismo.En la actualidad Federico García Lorca es el poeta español más leído de todos los tiempos.
