Frank Trommler schreibt in seinen Erinnerungen die unterhaltsame Geschichte eines jungen Deutschen, der sich keineswegs auf Amerika ausrichtet, jedoch von seiner Reiselust nicht lassen kann und auf die Lebensbahn eines Professors für deutsche Literatur an amerikanischen Eliteuniversitäten gerät. Angesichts des Niedergangs deutscher Sprache und Literatur im intellektuellen Haushalt des Landes widmet er einen Großteil seiner Energie der Reform des Deutschunterrichts und dem Aufbau der German Studies Association, deren Präsident er zur Zeit der Wiedervereinigung wird. Als Humanities Director des American Institute for Contemporary German Studies in Washington organisiert er ein vielbeachtetes Programm der kritischen Begegnung mit deutscher Kultur. Nach dem Wirken der Flüchtlinge aus dem Dritten Reich entsteht hier das Bild der noch wenig bekannten Geschichte der "zweiten" Generation deutscher US-Emigranten.
