Sam Shepards Theaterstück ist aber nicht nur eine Geschichte über Klassenrivalitäten, sondern vielmehr eine über unterschwellige häusliche Gewalt, die Zerstörung kindlicher, geschwisterlicher und ehelicher Beziehungen – und über die Liebe, die nach dem natürlichen Verlauf der Verwüstung noch übriggeblieben ist“ (Vorwort von Michael Schindlbeck in: Sam Shepard, Lügengespinst) Martin Schindlbeck gelingt es, in nur wenigen Zeilen Sam Shepards vielschichtiges Drama „A lie of the mind“ zusammenzufassen. Ich möchte bei meiner Betrachtung von dem Liebespaar ausgehen, dass sich aus diesen zwei Familien gefunden hat. Jake und Beth haben geheiratet und sind zusammengezogen. „A lie of the mind“ zeigt den Tiefpunkt dieser Ehe. Jake hat seine Frau Beth geschlagen! - tot geschlagen? Eifersucht und Raserei - Einbildung, nicht Beweise trieben ihn zu der Gewalttat, die den Ausgangspunkt für die Dramenhandlung bildet. Die geschundenen Kinder werden nach Hause geholt. Nun eröffnen sich Bilder, Hintergründe und Vergangenheit der Liebenden und ihrer Familien. Sam Shepards Dramentitel „A lie of the mind“ lässt ein „sorgfältig durchdachtes Gedankenwerk“2 vermuten, folgt man der Definition des deutschen Titels „Lügengespinst“ gilt es ein „System von Lügen“3 aufzudecken. Beim Lesen des Dramas richtete sich mein Augenmerk von der Figurenanalyse, über die Genderdarstellung und die Symbolik, bis mich letztendlich die Formen der Transformation anhaltend beschäftigten. Dieses Stilmittel, das Shepard in seinen Plot einbaut, scheint mir die Quelle zum Verständnis des Realitätsbewusstseins der Figuren im Drama zu sein, wodurch auch eine Verbindung zum Titel deutlich würde. Da der Transformationsvorgang von jeder einzelnen Figur den Umfang meiner Untersuchung sprengen, die Betrachtung von nur einer Figur hingegen, die Komplexität des Stückes verbergen würde, habe ich verschiedene Motive aus dem Drama ausgewählt, anhand derer ich Beispiele für Transformation untersuchen möchte. Dabei werde ich versuchen die Ursache herauszustellen sowie die Form, Auswirkungen und Folgen festzuhalten.
