Der vorliegende Band faßt Aufsätze des Bochumer Neutestamentlers zusammen, die sich mit Jesus, seiner Botschaft und seinem Weg, aber auch mit der in der Überlieferung der Evangelien sich ausdrückenden Christologie befassen. Eine erste Gruppe von Beiträgen behandelt die Gottesverkündigung Jesu und das auf ihn zurückgehende "Gebet des Herrn". Es folgen Abhandlungen über Jesu Ruf in die "Nachfolge" und seine ethischen Weisungen (Liebesgebot, Verbot der Ehescheidung). Die Leidengeschichte Jesu ist Gegenstand weiterer Untersuchungen. Dabei steht sowohl die historische Rückfrage als auch die Theologie der Passiongeschichte im Zentrum des Fragens. Die vier letzten Studien befassen sich mit explizit christologischen Themen: Davidsohn-Frage, Präexistenz-Christologie, und Neuschöpfung in Christus. Insgesamt liegt somit ein Werk vor, das aktuelle Aspekte der Jesus-Forschung erörtert und zugleich die Anfänge der Christologie ins Blickfeld rückt.

In this work, the author investigates Gal 1:13-14, Gal 3:6-14, 1 Thess 4:13-17, 2 Cor 12:1-10 and Rom 10:4 and then expounds how Paul, although originating from Judaism and having been educated in Jewish Biblical interpretation, reaches a new hermeneutic only after his experience of Christ. The apostle proves to be dependent neither on apocalyptic views nor on the methods of Greek Rhetoric nor on Rabbinic Midrash, although he is well versed in them. Instead, he develops a Christological interpretation of the Torah, and this interpretation becomes the centre of his mission to the non-Jews. The Torah finds its eschatological fulfillment in Christ and receives its ethical validity for the nations in the form of the love command.

English summary: Enno Edzard Popkes analyzes the relationship between the motifs of the semantics of love and the dualistic motifs in the Johannine writings, which inspired eminently contrasting interpretations. He shows that it is inappropriate to ascribe a particularistic tendency to the Johannine writings. The song of songs of the love of God (1 John 4:7-5:4) and the dramaturgic Christology of the love of God in the Gospel of John are culmination points in the formation of early Christian theology. Without giving an analogy, they reflect and formulate why the life and death of Jesus can be understood as an event of God's love. The direction of this concept towards universal salvation is not relativized by the dualistic motifs of the Gospel of John, but emphasized. German description: Fur die Interpretation der johanneischen Schriften galt seit Bultmann ein tiefgreifender Dualismus als bestimmende Kategorie. Dieser wurde religionsgeschichtlich entweder aus gnostischen oder aus fruhjudisch-qumranischen Kreisen hergeleitet. Enno Edzard Popkes arbeitet demgegenuber exegetisch heraus, dass das Netzwerk der vielfaltigen Aussagen uber die Liebe Gottes zur Welt, Jesu zu den Jungern oder der Junger untereinander die Tragweite der dualistischen Aussagen einschrankt und einen anderen Schlussel zum Verstandnis sowohl der Johannesbriefe als auch des Johannesevangeliums bietet. Der Autor erstellt eine ausfuhrliche Analyse aller durch dualistische und liebessemantische Motive gepragten Texte der johanneischen Schriften und stutzt das erhobene Verstandnis durch sorgfaltige religionsgeschichtliche Vergleiche ab. So zeigt sich die Theologie der Liebe Gottes im ersten Johannesbrief und die narrativ ausgestaltete dramaturgische Christologie der Liebe Gottes im Johannesevangelium, durch die deutlich wird, inwiefern das Leben und der Tod Jesu in osterlicher Perspektive als ein Geschehen der Liebe Gottes verstanden werden konnen.
