Rebuilding Life after Brain Injury: Dreamtalk tells the survival story of Sheena McDonald, who in 1999 was hit by a police van and suffered a very severe brain injury. Sheena’s story is told from her own, personal standpoint and also from two further unique and invaluable perspectives. Allan Little, a BBC journalist and now Sheena’s husband, describes both the physical and mental impact of the injury on himself and on Sheena. Gail Robinson, Sheena’s neuropsychological rehabilitation specialist, provides professional commentaries on Sheena’s condition, assessment and recovery process. The word Dreamtalk, created by Allan to describe Sheena’s once "hallucinogenic state", sets the tone for this book. It humanises and contextualises the impact of brain injury, providing support and encouragement for patients, professionals and families. It presents exclusive insights into each stage of recovery, spanning coma, altered consciousness, post-traumatic amnesia and rehabilitation; all showing how she has defied conventional clinical expectations and made an exceptional recovery. This book is valuable reading to those who have suffered a brain injury and also to professionals such as neurologists, neuropsychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists working in the field.

This is the first book of its kind to include the personal accounts of people who have survived injury to the brain, along with professional therapists' reports of their progress through rehabilitation. The paintings and stories of survivors combine with experts' discussions of the theory and practice of brain injury rehabilitation to illustrate the ups and downs that survivors encounter in their journey from pre-injury status to insult and post-injury rehabilitation. Wilson, Winegardner and Ashworth's focus on the survivors' perspective shows how rehabilitation is an interactive process between people with brain injury, health care staff, and others, and gives the survivors the chance to tell their own stories of life before their injury, the nature of the insult, their early treatment, and subsequent rehabilitation. Presenting practical approaches to help survivors of brain injury achieve functionally relevant and meaningful goals, Life After Brain Injury: Survivors’ Stories will help all those working in rehabilitation understand the principles involved in holistic brain injury rehabilitation and how these principles, combined with theory and models, translate into clinical practice. This book will be of great interest to anyone who wishes to extend their knowledge of the latest theories and practices involved in making life more manageable for people who have suffered damage to the brain. Life After Brain Injury: Survivors’ Stories will also be essential for clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, and anybody dealing with acquired brain injury whether they be a survivor of a brain injury themselves, a relative, a friend or a carer.

A Different Perspective After Brain Injury written by Christopher Yeoh and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-14 with Psychology categories.

Whilst preparing for his travel adventures into a world he had yet to explore, Christopher Yeoh was involved in a road traffic accident and experienced something few others would be "privileged" to witness. Eight days in a coma, more than a year in and out of hospital and a gradual re-introduction to the world of work. A Different Perspective After Brain Injury: A Tilted Point of View is written entirely by the survivor, providing an unusually introspective and critical personal account of life following a serious blow to the head. It charts the initial insult, early rehabilitation, development of understanding, the return of emotion, moments of triumph and regression into depression, the exercise of reframing how a brain injury is perceived and a return to work. It also describes the mental adjustments of awareness and acceptance alongside the physical recovery process. Readily accessible to the general public, this book will also be of particular interest to professionals involved in the care of people who have had significant brain injuries, brain injury survivors, their families and friends and also those who fund and organise health and social care. This unique author account will provide a degree of understanding of what living with a hidden disability is really like.

In 2010 my life changed forever. The teenage driver who struck me while I was cycling in my home town was barely old enough to shave. Bones were broken, flesh was torn and I entered the strange and surrealistic new world of traumatic brain injury. I started chronicling my journey as a brain injury survivor very early on with my first written piece completed a short 48 hours after my accident. The years continued to pass and I did what I do best, I wrote - often in painful and heartbreaking detail about my life's struggles as a brain injury survivor. But time passed and my journey became easier. Never easy, but easier. Looking back, I realized that I had an immense body of written work that offered a feel for what life is like as a true survivor. Each written piece is strong in its own right, but woven together as a collection, readers will come away with an insider's perspective about what life is really like for brain injury survivors and those who love them. There are three distinct segments in this volume, Learning to Crawl, Learning to Walk, and Learning to Soar. In Learning to Crawl, readers feel the pain of early life after traumatic brain injury redefines life. Learning to Walk demonstrates that the first few steps can be hard, but can indeed be mastered. In Learning to Soar, the magnificent reality that a meaningful life can be lived after a brain injury is revealed. Recovery from a traumatic brain injury cannot be measured in days, weeks or even months. Recovery is lifelong. No longer do I look at recovery as "getting back" to the life I once had. Rather, recovery to me is now defined as coexisting with my brain injury. I have slowly learned that there will be good days - days that I cherish, and there will be hard days - that will always pass. It is my hope that you will find hope in this volume of essays, that you may better understand the degree to which a brain injury affects not only the survivor, but all who know them. And that you will come away with a new belief that, though forever changed, a meaningful and fulfilling life after TBI is possible.

Living With Mild Brain Injury written by Pauline O'Connor and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-29 with Psychology categories.

This important book presents a unique, personal account of the impact a mild traumatic brain injury can have. It tells the story of Pauline, who was 33 when a late football tackle caused a bleed in her brain which went undiscovered for 18 months. The account includes descriptions of hidden symptoms of concussion and post-concussion syndrome, pitfalls in diagnoses, the uneven progress of recovery and the effect of the varied reactions which others have to an acquired brain injury. The author incorporates memories alongside extracts from clinic notes, diary entries and emails to reflect the disjointed progress of diagnosis and recovery as- although similar- no two head injuries are the same. Through this book, the reader gains an appreciation of the confusion experienced by many brain injury survivors, which sheds light on why some may develop unusual behavior or mental health issues, and how such issues can be alleviated. Brain injuries are poorly understood by the general public and this can lead to difficult interactions. Moreover, complications in diagnosis means some may not realize they have this milder form of brain injury. This book will enlighten brain injury survivors and affected families and allow professionals an insight into their patients’ experiences. As concerns grow over the risks which contact sports pose, this book shows how even mild brain injuries can wreak havoc with careers, relationships and one’s sense of self, but that a happy life can still be found.

Being Here written by Jake Band and has been published by Atlantic Publishing Company this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

About 10 years after Jake Band’s accident, an emergency room doctor told him that due to all of his post-accident accomplishments, he was one in a billion. The number of zeros increased upon every achievement. Since then, he has graduated college, gotten married, and much more. In addition to the things Band learned in rehab and in the “real world”, Being-Here also includes information he acquired from college, other survivors, and plenty of graduate school research in rehabilitation journals. Being-Here is about facing your new world and life after surviving your TBI. Nobody, outside of the circle of survivors, can possibly have a clue what your life is like now. Band explains the unique things he did to face his new world. This was not only done with the hope that it could help you face similar, but unique deficits, but Band’s purpose for writing Being-Here was to convince you not to give up, even if people, such as “rehabilitation professionals”, pre-accident “friends”, and even family members give up on you and/or your future. Being-Here is a place to go for encouragement, to hear or read some positive words, and to find some of the needed fuel for your life-long journey and discovery.
