"In The Dying of Enoch Wallace, neuroscientist Ira Black tells the story of modern neuroscience, drawing us into the world of discovery and scientists, with all their color, idiosyncrasies, and genius. A tale spanning a century and multiple continents, it moves from fascist Italy, with the discovery of neuronal growth factor (NGF) by a young scientist working in a secret, makeshift laboratory in her bedroom, and progresses to current experiments in which transplanted, laboratory-grown cells lead to recovery of function in damaged brain regions. To bridge the gap between abstract concepts and real-world experience, Dr. Black draws upon his work as a clinical neurologist to provide a second dramatic account - the fictionalized story of a successful investment banker's battle with Alzheimer's disease - that vividly complements the main narrative. From his first fleeting memory lapses to his final descent into dementia, each fateful step in Enoch's tragic decline becomes a window onto another aspect of brain function and the latest groundbreaking neuroscientific research."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. But mere bars and mortar are nothing to hold the accomplished thief known only as Rapscallion! Avery soon finds himself pursued harder than ever by the iron law of the land. Though he encounters many common folk in his travels, both kind and devious alike, none capture his attention so firmly as one, Amelia Bairns. The young woman is kind, well mannered, fair tempered, and an ardent Christian. She is every inch a lady. And what is he to do if she will not have him as well?

This publication reviews medicolegal investigation of sudden, unexpected pediatric deaths, focusing on systems and procedures in the United States and those deaths which remain incompletely understood or entirely unexplained. It discusses the evolution of our understanding and practice in the area of sudden, unexpected pediatric death investigation, covering the changing philosophies and medical theories as to causation and changing investigative and certification strategies. Procedural guidance for investigation, autopsy and ancillary testing, certification and reporting, and key considerations for prevention, research and working with family members and other professional team members are provided. The path to production of this publication began in 2016 when the National Association of Medical Examiners received a scientific grant from the SUDC Foundation called "Sudden Death in Pediatrics: Consensus for Investigation, Certification, Research Direction and Family Needs" to convene, in collaboration with the American Academy of Pediatrics, an expert panel to identify and discuss the diverse issues and limitations surrounding these deaths and build a foundation for national consensus. The combined effort of a panel of medical examiners, pediatricians, and federal agency representatives, representing the diverse interests of death investigation, autopsy performance, certification, clinical subspecialties (pediatrics, neurology, cardiology, child abuse, injury prevention, infectious diseases, genetics, and metabolic diseases), family needs, prevention, and epidemiology, culminated in this publication.

The role of experience is crucial in the development of the nervous system. The definition of experience includes neural activity, hormonal environment, and social interactions, as well as exposure to sensory stimuli. There are a variety of organism-environment interactions that guide the development of the nervous system. There is evidence that early sensory experiences enhance brain development and make for a more intelligent adult. A common theme throughout the book is the biological mechanism of early experiential influences in neural development. The book covers three stages of development: (1) embryonic or perinatal manipulations; (2) manipulations early after birth or hatching; (3) major periods of transformation in the organism's life. The first stimuli felt by an organism is at the embryonic stage. For example, the expression of prenatal reflexes and movements regulates the life and death of developing neurons and is necessary for the normal development of the nervous system. Another example is the sensory system, the development of which starts before the organism has any sensory input. Furthermore, interactions between a pregnant or nursing female and her environment can influence the environment experienced by her offspring. As regards the organism's development right after birth, evidence suggests that sensory deprivation of a particular system may lead to the death of its neurons. Experiments have been conducted on the olfactory bulb in the rodent and chick auditory systems. The major periods of transformation refer to clear changes in neural structure and function. One of the most extraordinary transformations observed in developing organisms is metamorphosis. During this stage, some neurons may die, others alter their anatomy, take on a new function, and die at a later time. In some organisms, an entirely new sensory epithelium is formed, while in others, learned behavioral changes become biologically possible due to growth of cells that comprise a neural circuit.
