Twentieth Century America written by Thomas C. Reeves and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-05-18 with History categories.

As this most tumultuous century draws to a close, the need for a concise and trustworthy history is clear. Recent decades have seen the publication of American histories that are either bloated with unnecessary detail or infused with a polemical purpose that undermines their authority. InTwentieth-Century America, Thomas C. Reeves provides a fluidly written narrative history that combines the rare virtues of compression, inclusiveness, and balance. From Progressivism and the New Deal right up to the present, Reeves covers all aspects of American history, providing solid coverage of each era without burying readers in needless detail or trivia. This approach allows readers to grasp the major developments and continuities of American history and to come away with a cohesive picture of the whole of the twentieth century. The volume stresses social and well as political history, emphasizing the roles played by all Americans--including immigrants, minorities, women, and working people--and pays special attention to such topics as religion, crime, public health, national prosperity, and the media. Reeves is careful throughout to present both sides of controversial subjects and yet does not leave readers bewildered about which interpretations are most strongly supported or where to explore these issues more thoroughly. At the conclusion of each chapter, the author cites ten authoritative volumes for further study. The bibliographies, as well as the text, are refreshing in their lack of ideological bent. "Objectivity," Reeves suggests, "is an illusive but worthy goal for the historian." For anyone wishing to achieve a lucid historical overview of the past 100 years, Twentieth-Century America is the best place to start.

FROM THE PREFACE "This book began with our students. -I he twentieth century is the time they entered the world, the time they are most familiar with, yet parts of which seem distant, even ancient to them. Their lives, who they are, where they live, and what they believe are most intimately connected with this century Our objective is to render both the familiar and the distant events and people of the twentieth century accessible and connected to our students' lives today, The key to achieving that goal is a strong clear narrative. "Twentieth-Century America" is a compelling story of soaring ideals, incomparable tragedies, and perseverance, which is to say, the stuff of all human history." Learning tools make the twentieth century come alive: American Voices open up each oh the chapters. Consisting of letters, diary entries, and other first-hand accounts, these voices highlight the personal dimensions of the American journey and show students the wealth and variety of experiences that make up the country's history. From Carlotta Silvas Martins' traumatic account of the Great Depression era in the 1930s to Cambodian refugee Celia Noup's harrowing journey to California in the 1980s, these voices set the stage for key themes that are explored in each chapter. American Views, primary-source documents with introductions and pre-reading questions, are found in each chapter and bring people of the past and their concepts vividly alive. Such important topics as the plight of Japanese-Americans interned during World War II and the relationship between religion and politics are examined in these powerful excerpts. Overview Tables in each chapter summarize complex issues. Key Topics, Key Terms, and Review Questions reinforce the concepts presented in each chapter.

Life According To Henry written by Henry Ratliff and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-06-25 with categories.

Life According to Henry is the published memoir through the eyes and mind of Henry Ratliff. As an octogenarian, Henry sat down to write the story of his life. The course of time was nearing end, kids were grown, grandkids growing up, and his beloved wife Beulah had already met Jesus. The complexities in this book are organized largely untouched and straight from the mind of a school teacher and school master. Great lengths have been made to keep the original content as such. Life in 20th Century is typically pressed through the lens of historians. Subjects like the Great Depression, The Great War, World War II, The Korean War, are notably the most widely published and read works of the 20th century; many which tell the narrative of hard times, hope, and life in America. Life According To Henry accounts for a family who lived through these times and more. The modern world was catching up on Henry. He just had to focus to get the family story out and into the hands of his folks before he himself met eternity. The project begins to unfold as one of Henry's grandson's, Jason Ratliff; requested the task of publishing the story. Initially he talked to Henry's son and daughters. Then to siblings and others. Everyone wanted a copy of the type-written document but life was happening to all. Busy with it himself, Jason left it to collect dust until one day on a chance trip to Europe for a Wedding, Jason read the entire story on an airplane. 1/2 of the story was read in route to Amsterdam, the balance on a flight back to the USA from Paris. Jason checked again with those in his world. The book was fascinating. From the family perspective it was a ray of light into family heritage. From a pupil's perspective, it was everything a kid learned in school. History class to social studies and beyond, the depiction of the life of a family who migrated the country to beat the devil out of his game of claiming life, destroying families; by and in pursuit of the American dream. Especially so, living a life worth living. The bonds of family are inherently present, choice of words so complex, yet simple sets of common speech combined to tell the story of a man from the south, to a small town in central Indiana. Imagine yourself what it would be like to stare through the portal of time to see life through the perspective of grace and compassion. To see life through the eyes of a man named Henry is to value people and their contributions to society.
