In Wild Grass, Pulitzer Prize—winning journalist Ian Johnson tells the stories of three ordinary Chinese citizens moved to extraordinary acts of courage: a peasant legal clerk who filed a class-action suit on behalf of overtaxed farmers, a young architect who defended the rights of dispossessed homeowners, and a bereaved woman who tried to find out why her elderly mother had been beaten to death in police custody. Representing the first cracks in the otherwise seamless façade of Communist Party control, these small acts of resistance demonstrate the unconquerable power of the human conscience and prophesy an increasingly open political future for China.

When you are bred to be eaten, freedom is your only hope. Sam had never liked the way the livestock on the farm were treated. She understood that the animals were her parents' livelihood and that nothing much could be done about it; still, their fate troubled her. When her father herded them into the yards for drenching, tailing, or drafting, she mostly bit her lip and turned a blind-eye to the harshness of it all. Set on a farm on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, Graeme Brasher's The Wild Grass is the stirring tale of twin lambs' attempts to escape their fate. The lambs live alongside the human family who own them and the wild animals who make their living on the periphery of the farm. Feral cats and scavenger crows threaten, but it is the humans who care for them that pose the gravest threat. When flooding leads to plans for the early dispatch of the lambs to market, the twins are forced to recognize their lives are at risk. Each must now make choices that mean the difference between life and death. Sanctuary lies a long perilous journey away. Can the Untamed lead them to safety?

Endophytic fungi are common and diverse in plants. Yet the nature of their interactions with host plants, and how these interactions cascade upward to communities and ecosystems, is largely unknown. In the first book of its kind, Gregory P. Cheplick and Stanley H. Faeth synthesize existing studies of endophyte-grass symbioses within the context of modern ecological and evolutionary concepts. The authors cover a broad range of topics including the effects of endophytes on herbivory, host growth, physiology, reproduction, and competitive ability in a variety of grasses and environments. Clearly and engagingly written, Ecology and Evolution of the Grass-Endophyte Symbiosis highlights the most essential aspects of symbiosis ecology and evolution while suggesting avenues for future research.

Forty Four Years Of The Life Of A Hunter written by Meshach Browning and has been published by Pantianos Classics this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1859 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

Meshach Browning spent decades as a professional hunter and trapper of bears, boars and deer in rural Maryland during the early 1800s - this is his story, in his own words. Born in modest circumstances, Browning grew up at a time when the United States as a nation was in its infancy, with much of the population living in rural areas. From his youth, the author vowed to be self-sufficient, leaving his home and first love to hone his abilities as a hunter. Returning with money gained from selling pelts and meat, it is then that Meshach contemplates hunting as a career. The equipment used by the author is much inferior to that of the modern day. Meshach's use of a musket - a gun whose reliability is demonstrated as poor in several instances - leads him to rely on his skills in close quarters combat. On multiple hunts, described with stunning vividness in these pages, Browning's ability to battle animals in melee saves his life. The dangers of his trade are balanced by its lucrativeness: bear meat and pelt for instance fetched high prices on the open market. Though his life's work is the primary subject, Meshach Browning shows a tender side when describing his first marriage; his loving wife Mary bore him several children. In later chapters, he proudly teaches his sons the craft which sustained their family for so many years.
