Nanotechnology For Water And Wastewater Treatment written by Piet Lens and has been published by IWA Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-07-14 with Science categories.
The rapid development of nanoscience enables a technology revolution that will soon impact virtually every facet of the water sector. Yet, there is still too little understanding of what nanoscience and nanotechnology is, what can it do and whether to fear it or not, even among the educated public as well as scientists and engineers from other disciplines. Despite the numerous books and textbooks available on the subject, there is a gap in the literature that bridges the space between the synthesis (conventional and more greener methods) and use (applications in the drinking water production, wastewater treatment and environmental remediation fields) of nanotechnology on the one hand and its potential environmental implications (fate and transport of nanomaterials, toxicity, Life Cycle Assessments) on the other. Nanotechnology for Water and Wastewater Treatment explores these topics with a broad-based multidisciplinary scope and can be used by engineers and scientists outside the field and by students at both undergraduate and post graduate level.

Many potential questions regarding the risks associated with the development and use of wide-ranging technologies enabled through engineered nanomaterials. For example, with over 600 consumer products available globally, what information exists that describes their risk to human health and the environment? What en- neering or use controls can be deployed to minimize the potential environmental health and safety impacts of nanomaterials throughout the manufacturing and product lifecycles? How can the potential environmental and health benefits of nanotechnology be realized and maximized? The idea for this book was conceived at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on “Nanomaterials: Environmental Risks and Benefits and Emerging Consumer Products. ” This meeting – held in Algarve, Portugal, in April 2008 – started with building a foundation to harmonize risks and benefits associated with nanomaterials to develop risk management approaches and policies. More than 70 experts, from 19 countries, in the fields of risk assessment, decision-analysis, and security discussed the current state-of-knowledge with regard to nanomaterial risk and benefits. The discussion focused on the adequacy of available risk assessment tools to guide nanomaterial applications in industry and risk governance. The workshop had five primary purposes: Describe the potential benefits of nanotechnology enabled commercial products. Identify and describe what is known about environmental and human health risks of nanomaterials and approaches to assess their safety. Assess the suitability of multicriteria decision analysis for reconciling the benefits and risks of nanotechnology.

Nanoparticles As Sustainable Environmental Remediation Agents written by Konstantinos Simeonidis and has been published by Royal Society of Chemistry this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-18 with Science categories.
The expanding use of nanoparticles in a wide range of applications has brought to light the need to adopt an integrated approach regarding their synthesis, use, recovery and handling. This book covers the intense research field of nanoparticle utilization as remediation agents for toxic pollutants, and pays special attention to their post-application recovery, the monitoring of their fate when released, and life cycle analysis. The reader may therefore evaluate the prospects and limitations of these technologies through the prism of sustainability demands. Several chapters summarize successful applications of single or multi-phase nanoparticles for drinking water purification, wastewater and gas-stream treatment and soil consolidation. Importantly, they evaluate the potential scale-up for real-world applications that need to compete with traditional treatment methods. However, the risk of uncontrolled release into the environment can be a significant drawback to the extended use of nanoparticles. For this reason, a detailed analysis is given to aspects of their post-use recycling and regeneration, determination of release pathways, risk assessment methods and life cycle evaluation studies, highlighting the importance of preventing the unintended release of nanoparticles into the environment. This book will be a valuable resource for anyone looking at the development of nanoparticles with a view to environmental remediation strategies.
