Excerpt from Life in an Indian Village I have been asked by Mr. T. Ramakrishna the writer of these sketches, which appeared originally in a magazine published at Madras, to put a preface to them in their collected form. I am very willing to do so, because the little book appears to me an honest and intelligent attempt to convey to the English public some ideas about the life led by ninety percent, of the people in the most Indian part of India. In the north of that country or continent, one invasion after another, from the far-off coming of the Aryans all through history, has profoundly modified the conditions of life. The vast Dravidian population of the South itself probably came to India from outside. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Village, Town, and Jungle, Life in India In an article in The Calcutta Review of January 1893 on Cold Weather Visitors in India, after commenting on the mistakes made by one of them, the writer remarks that such crude and undigested impressions of India are useless and mischievous, and that, as they pass muster at home for real facts, perhaps more might be done to place a true picture of the state of things before our countrymen. He suggests that a few who have passed much of their lives in India might record the facts "before Indian impressions have had time to fade away, and while they are still surrounded by all the local colour." My long experience of life in that country between 1874 and 1902 in many parts - town and jungle, hills and plains - has enabled me to collect much detailed information. I have arranged these notes in the hope that they may be interesting to those about to proceed to India, and to many who stay at home. Excerpt from Indian Village Folk: Their Works and Ways Nome idea of a village house in India will be given in the chapters describing the different handicrafts. It is proposed to begin this book with a faithful account of the habits and customs of the inmates of a village house in a tropical climate. To give a clear idea of the actual life of the people, it will be necessary to describe carefully a selected typical house. All the dwellings in a village are built in the same way; and though there are serious disadvantages in the method of construction, the houses are precisely adapted to the needs of those who have to live in a hot country. Excerpt from Indian Folk Tales: Being Side-Lights on Village Life in Bilaspore, Central Provinces It is generally found that most Of the primitive peoples are exceedingly reticent as to their beliefs and practices. In order to gain anything like an accurate understanding of their most inward thoughts it is necessary to reside amongst them for a long while, and watch them when they do not know that they are under Observation. According to an English proverb, It is in sports and journeys that a man is known. SO in order to understand the real India - the India Of the villages - it is necessary not only to live amongst the peasants of that land from year's end to year's end, through hot and cold and rainy weather, through sunshine and shadow, but also to speak with them in their own dialect, and understand the exact signifi cance Of their most common words both in work and play. Excerpt from Indian Stories Many years ago I lived among the Indians and knew them well. They were very different from the Indians of to-day. It would be hard now to find any Indians who are as close to the original traditions as were those old friends of mine. I want to give the boys and girls of to-day a chance to see the Indian as I saw him, and to know how he lived and what he thought. It is a pleasure to tell this story; for I came to love the Indian, and I had great respect for him and for his manner of life. When I first lived among the Dakotas, they were still strongly prejudiced in favor of the old ways, tradi tions and customs. They looked back-with regret upon earlier times, when they lived, unmolested, the wild, free life of the forests. They said that their ancestors were better men than they, because their ancestors lived closer to the Great Spirit, by whom the actions of all Indians were guided. I give the stories as they were told to me by old men who knew and loved the old-time ways, and who wanted to give me the real facts because they saw that I respected their customs and believed in them. In these stories I share with the boys and girls of to-day, who can never know the old-fashioned Indians, my recollections of a busy and happy life among them, at a time when they had not unlearned all the old customs.
