CHAPTER I 9 HER CHILDHOOD AND CALL TO ARMS The foolish things of the world hath God chosen, that He may confound the wise and the weak things of the world hath God chosen, that He may confound the strong."- I Cor. i, 27-29. CHAPTER II 22 HER RELIEF OF ORLEANS AND CROWNING OF THE KING She kept him safe from his enemies, and she defended him from seducers. . . . She forsook not the just when he was sold, but delivered him from sinners; she went down with him into the pit; and in bands she left him not, till she brought him the sceptre of the kingdom, and power against those that oppressed him."-Wisdom x, 12-14. CHAPTER III 38 HER CAPTURE AND INIQUITOUS CONDEMNATION "In Thy sight are all they that afflict me: my heart bath expected reproach and misery. And I looked for one that would grieve together with me, but there was none; and for one that would comfort me, and I found none."-Ps. lxviii, 21-22. CHAPTER IV 54 HER DEATH AT THE STAKE AND HER TRIUMPH Behold I am in your hands - do with me what is good and right in your eyes. But know ye, and understand, that if you put me to death, you will shed innocent blood against your own selves, and against this city, and the inhabitants thereof. For in truth the Lord sent me to you, to speak all these words in your hearing." -, Jer. xxvi, 14-15. CHAPTER V 70 HER REHABILITATION AND WORLD-WIDE APOTHEOSIS "I beseech those that shall read this book, that they be not shocked at these calamities, but that they consider the things that happened, not as being for the destruction, but for the correction of our nation . . . for though He chastise His people with adversity, He forsaketh them not."-II Mac. vi. PREFACE THE arrangements of Divine Providence are inexhaustible. We live in an age when the energies of women are of necessity taking new directions. The old home life is impossible or insufficient for many of them, and they have to go forth abroad to live often solitary lives, to work out a career unaided, and to enter upon pursuits which until recent times were confined to the stronger sex. It is useless to ignore this tendency. It arises from causes, which cannot be controlled. But while this transformation and development of womanly activity goes on, it is all-important that the sacred characteristics which give to womanhood its power and its charm should not be overshadowed by the stress and toil which accompany the new conditions in which it is now placed. And in this moment the Church of God sets up before our gaze the beautiful figure of Blessed Joan the Maid, called by God from home and given a work in which many brave men had failed. She did her work, she went in and out in camp and city, but she still remained the gentle, simple maiden. May her story, told so eloquently by the writer of the following pages, teach our Catholic maidens, and women of every degree, how to do whatever God puts into their hands to do, and yet keep untouched and bright all the glory of their womanhood. X FRANCIS, Archbishop of Westminster.

Joan of Arc, St. Joan, the patron saint of soldiers and France, remains the only person to ever be both condemned and canonized by the Catholic Church. Joan of Arc's short yet extraordinary life has inspired writers, artists, activists, and politicians throughout time. Her story is featured everywhere from First World War song lyrics to a new musical by David Byrne. She rose to fame with her notable military victory on the battlefield at Orléans; however, there are other ways in which her life influenced the course of history. From her story emerges a persona that millions, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, have come to regard as the embodiment of courage and faith.

Excerpt from Life of the Blessed Joan of Arc: A Sermon Preached in the Church of St. Mary of the Angels, Bayswater, London, W "I have lifted up my eyes to the mountains, from whence help shall come to me, "My help is from the Lord who made heaven and earthy" - Psalm cxx. 1, 2. I Have been requested to address you this forenoon on the Life of the Blessed Joan of Arc, whose statue was blessed on Wednesday last by His Grace The Archbishop of Westminster. But you will permit me first of all to express my earnest thanks to the Committee who organized this presentation, and to all those who co-operated with them. Their generosity has placed in our midst a beautiful work of art, but more than this: a figure whose every outline speaks of the spirit of prayer and of confidence in the help of God. The Maid of Orleans seems to be ever saying in our presence: "I have lifted up my eyes to the mountains, from whence help shall come to me. My help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth." What I have to say shall be expressed in as few words as possible; for although the life of the Blessed Joan of Arc extended over only nineteen years and five months, the amount of material is very great. Let it be understood at the outset that the sources from which my details shall be drawn are no vague, legendary stories, but the authentic minutes taken down at her Trial, and the sworn depositions of a large number of witnesses at the Rehabilitation about twenty years after her death. Identifies and investigates international medievalism through three distinct strands: "Internationally Nationalist", "Someone Else's Past?", and "Activist Medievalism". Medievalism - the reception of the Middle Ages - often invokes a set of tropes generally considered 'medieval', rather than consciously engaging with medieval cultures and societies. International medievalism offers an additional interpretative layer by juxtaposing two or more national cultures, at least one of which is medieval. 'National' can be aspirational: it might refer to the area within agreed borders, or to the people who live there, but it might also describe the people who understand, or imagine, themselves to constitute a nation. And once 'medieval' becomes simply a collection of ideas, it can be re-formed as desired, cast as more geographically than historically specific, or function as a gateway to an even more nebulous past. This collection identifies and investigates international medievalism through three distinct strands, 'Internationally Nationalist', 'Someone Else's Past?', and 'Activist Medievalism', exploring medievalist media from the textual to the architectural. Subjects range from The Green Children of Woolpit to Refugee Tales, and from Viking metal to Joan of Arc. As the contributors to each section make clear, for centuries the medieval has provided material for countless competing causes and cannot be contained within historical, political, or national borders. The essays show how the medieval is repeatedly co-opted and recreated, formed as much as formative: inviting us to ask why, and in service of what.
